All of us are taking from the next generation. I was paying into my parents while they were still here. My boys are paying my SS, my grandkids will be paying theirs. LBJ ensured that when he started putting the money into the general fund in 1965 and using it for everything but the purpose for which it was intended. As for FDR, if he wasn’t a socialist then I’m Daffy Duck.

What I’m not is a welfare recipient!

Sorry, but if you are TAKING money from me (and my kids), which you are, then you are no different than those moms in ‘LaHood’.

Again, it is NOT the fault of my kids that your generation was UNABLE to hold on to its savings.

And therein lies the problem, doesn't it? The only way to end this scheme is to stop adding people to the system. This would, naturally, create a rapid and cumulative shortfall in revenue that would have to be made up from other taxes, effectively reversing the flow of money that for decades went from Social Security to the general fund.

Unfortunately the only way that could possibly be achieved is by massive cuts to most government programs and eliminating the purely welfare portions of Social Security like SSDI. We would also need a government that actually understood how to grow an economy and thereby grow the tax base. Alas, recent elections have not been encouraging on this front.

the problem is that the money is running out. The original plan was for 10 or more workers for each senior. Then this was extended to unemployed, then others, etc. etc.

Also, this was planned for a time when, after retiring at 65, people lived at the most 10 more years.

now, many live for another 30 years

So, the retirement age needs to go up to pay for this

And, of course, there are less kids, hence less payers-in
