Horsemeat found in beef burgers manufactured for British supermarkets was imported from Poland, it emerged last night.
Tests have revealed that raw material supplied to an Irish processing plant, which made burgers for Tesco, Aldi, Lidl and Iceland, contained as much as 20 per cent horse DNA, the Irish Government said.
Around 10million beef burgers have been withdrawn from sale by supermarkets, and other smaller retailers in the UK, since the scandal, which centred around the Silvercrest factory, in County Monaghan, broke earlier this month.
Customers and food standards experts were left reeling after tests by the Foods Safety Authority of Ireland revealed burgers supplied to Tesco Britains biggest supermarket chain - contained 29.1 per cent horse DNA.

In places like Venice where horsemeat is fairly common, what kind of horse is used? Does it matter?

Friend of mine ate a horseburger in the Netherlands. Said it was delicious.
She also picked up the practice of putting mayo on fries. Way better than ketchup.

“Does it matter?”
When they’re selling it labeled it as beef it does.
If you’re just plain stupid it doesn’t matter.

When I asked if it mattered, I meant do different breeds of horse taste differently? (Arabian/Morgan/Draft for instance)
Someone here might know.

A horse is a horse, of course of course,
And nothing tastes a horse of course,
That is of course unless the horse

I have eaten horse meat, and it is quite good: much better than elephant-burgers, which are somewhat dry and tasteless.

On the French menu, horse would actually be much preferable.

this would be funny. If the horsemeat is from Poland, then this is pretty sad for the horses. The folks in the countryside in Poland can be quite poor and horses are livestock and some seem to (ok, to my city-slicker eyes) cruel.
Though I am puzzled about the meat coming from Poland -- Poland doesn't raise a lot of cows and beef is not a popular meat over here -- most of the meat at the supermarkets are pork, pork, pork! And chicken and turkey, but that's about it.
