Mrs. ArGee had some people over the other night from a class she took with NAMI - the National Alliance for Mental Illness. All these people had relatives who were mentally ill. All these people had money.
All these people were talking about letting the government take care of their mentally ill relatives. One woman had even sold the apartment where her schizophrenic daughter lived before entering into a supervised living facility. My wife asked this woman where the daughter was supposed to live once she was released. The woman said the government would find her a place.
To be fair, the woman's daughter has a history of violence. She can't live with the woman. But neither my wife nor I could fathom not doing what you could for a family member before "dumping them on the government" (our phrase, not theirs).
Again, all these women had means. But they assume it's the government's job to take care of their problems.
This statement sums up a century's worth of the essence of the entire "Progressive" enterprise.
