ENDING GUN VIOLENCE REQUIRES COMMITMENT, NOT ALL OF IT VOLUNTARY
Ann Coulter Dot Com ^ | 23 Jan 2013 | Ann Coulter

The good news is: Obama and the Senate Democrats have no intention of passing more idiotic gun legislation in response to the Newtown massacre. The bad news is that they also have no intention of passing any legislation about the mentally ill, which would actually do something to reduce these mass shootings.

Instead, the Democrats will jawbone about "assault weapons" and other meaningless gun laws for the sole purpose of scaring soccer moms into hating the National Rifle Association. Expect to hear a lot about Republicans preferring "the gun lobby" to "children." (Which is evidently not at all like preferring the teachers lobby to children.)

Democrats are hoping to pick up another dozen congressional seats in 2014, so they need terrified women.

Just don't expect a vote. Sen. Majority Leader Harry Reid cannot afford a vote on any of these nonsense gun laws because he needs to protect the seats of Democrats who have to get re-elected in districts where voters know something about guns.

Even the stupidest politician has to know how utterly meaningless "assault weapon" bans are. (In fairness, New York's Rep. Carolyn McCarthy and Gov. Andrew Cuomo may not know.) But Democrats need to gin up the most easily fooled voters.

"Assault weapons" are defined as "whatever politicians say they are." The guns that are banned and the ones that aren't are functionally identical. They're all semi-automatics.

Semi-automatics shoot one bullet per trigger pull -- that's the definition. Any handgun manufactured since the Civil War is a "semi-automatic." The most basic self-defense revolver for women is a "semi-automatic."

An example of a gun that is not a semi-automatic is a musket. Also those guns where a "BANG!" flag pops out when the clown pulls the trigger.

In the late 1980s, New York City Mayor Ed Koch tried to institutionalize Joyce Brown, a mentally ill heroin addict living on the street who went by the name "Billie Boggs" (after local television host Bill Boggs). Brown was defecating on herself, removing all her clothes, burning money, running into traffic and shouting obscenities at passers-by. In other words, she was a prototype for Occupy Wall Street.

Ann could have put her voice and talents behind our efforts to find a Republican candidate who could win ~ but, alas, she didn’t.

Semi-automatics shoot one bullet per trigger pull -- that's the definition. Any handgun manufactured since the Civil War is a "semi-automatic." The most basic self-defense revolver for women is a "semi-automatic."

The anorexic Romney-lover is again wrong on the details, and those details matter. A semi-automatic, or self-loading, firearm is a weapon that performs all steps necessary to prepare the weapon to fire again after firing—assuming cartridges remain in the weapon's feed device or magazine. Typically, this includes extracting and ejecting the spent cartridge case from the weapon's firing chamber, re-cocking the firing mechanism, and loading a new cartridge into the firing chamber. Although automatic weapons and selective fire firearms do the same tasks, semi-automatic firearms do not automatically fire an additional round until the trigger is released and re-pressed by the person firing the weapon.

It is not to our advantage as free Americans to blur the definition of the constitutionally-protected semi-automatic weapons that America's enemies are attacking in the public airways. On the contrary, we need to keep the definition in mind as we prepare for a possible temporary defeat. While any gun ban or gun grab would be unconstitutional, we cannot afford for decent Americans to be even "temporarily" disarmed in this political climate, not during the time it would take for such a ban to reach Sotomayor, Kagan, and the newly open-minded Justice Roberts.

The 67 million (mostly semi-automatic) new firearms sold since Obama took power are not nearly enough. We need to buy more revolvers, lever action, pump action, and bolt action weapons. They are not for punching holes in targets or for hunting, and during times like these when freedom is under direct assault, we have an even greater need than normal for weapons that will, at least in the first phase of any attack on our freedom, remain legal.

Yawn. Coulter’s bank account must be running low and she needs to sell more books to gullible Conservatives.

We can all thank the ACLU for defending the "rights" of the mentally incompetent, the legally insane, and dangerous lunatics to wander the streets.

Notice how silent thay have been on the whole Dandy Hook matter.

Insane asylums at the state level have proven inadequate to the task, as well as being too expensive for states to be willing to fund, so the alternative is to create a federal reservation medical center just for the criminally insane.

The only way to do it “safely” to avoid it being used abusively is for there to be multiple safeguards before anyone could be admitted, and re-diagnosis on an annual basis.

First, a local court would refer someone believed mentally ill to their county mental health care facility for a two week evaluation, which is done right now. If after two weeks in a controlled situation, county psychiatrists determine that they are dangerously mentally ill, then they would be transferred to the state hospital for a month long evaluation.

Only then could they be sent to the federal reservation medical center for evaluation with the possibility of institutionalization. And then re-diagnosed by a different psychiatrist each year. If they determined that the patient was no longer a threat to themselves or others, then a panel of psychiatrists could “send them back down the chain”, reversing the process.

Can’t find a decent Mosin Nagant anywhere right now. Just those crappy Chinese knock-offs. I even bought two boxes of cartridges for the one I had on reserve, but the guy at the gun shop told me this... They had the Mosins in a barrel by the front door for $119. Guys were coming in with $1500 looking for AR’s and when they couldn’t find them, were grabbing 2 or 3 Mosins on their way out of the store.

" no intention of passing any legislation about the mentally ill,"

We should be careful of what we wish for.
Liberals are the type of People who would define "the desire to own a firearm" itself as a mental illness.

You are emphasizing a Federal control over free people with rights, which unfortunately falls into the Leftist plan. Unacceptable.

The fight is to decentralize the Federal government. Return the Federal government to the maintenance of the union, not the ruling entity the Left has successfully manipulated it to become IMO.

I don’t believe we can succeed with the type of opposition we have in the Left by leaving a single crumb on the floor. We have to eliminate the ruling Federal, and make it the Constitutional Federal it was intended to be.

Get over it. We all supported Romney rather than the Kenyan usurper at the end - didn't help. She just jumped on the moderate bandwagon early showing that she knew how Republicans were likely to vote in the primaries

I can’t believe that people still post this left-wing hag on FR. It has been proven that her 2nd love, Cristie is a democrat set on destroying the republican party who assisted Obama’s re-election. Most here do not want to hear anything she has to say.

>>> Democrats are hoping to pick up another dozen congressional seats in 2014 ...... ‘mentally-ill” ..... end gun violence ....

She is only good when she attacks Democrats/Leftists bombastically.

Her free ‘advice’ to conservatives are almost always crappy.

Anyway, her thinking is still 'scoring points' in the DC game. And that is certainly not what we are facing right now.

The constitution does recognize that there are legitimate national authorities, and even though many of these legitimate authorities have been terribly abused, at their core they remain legitimate.

Real federalism, on the confederacy model, is attractive right now because of the abuses of the national government, but in their extreme, as well, they do not work as well as the balanced approach envisioned by the founding fathers.

The debate between federalism and anti-federalism will never be resolved “one way or another”, because things work best when there is limited contention between the two ideas.

However, this being said, when states ran insane asylums, there were many abusive problems. But this was a product of the times. Had the national government run them at the time, it would have made the same mistakes, or worse.

Eventually the state asylums more or less collapsed, from a combination of institutionalizing people who shouldn’t have been, and the tremendous costs associated with caring for the dangerously mentally ill. In many cases, they were just warehoused, pumped full of drugs and left in a near coma state for 23 out of 24 hours in a day.

In any event, the states no longer want to pay for the high security medical care for the dangerously mentally ill, so have abrogated that responsibility. This leaves only the national government as the institution of last resort.

Given their past horrific misconduct, they can be given no grace at all to provide care without strenuous supervision by non-governmental organizations, and only then after rigorous evaluation of prospective patients.

But someone has to. Society can no longer tolerate the criminally insane walking among them, and prisons are wholly inappropriate for the genuinely insane.
