The Food Safety Authority of Ireland (FSAI), which made the discovery, said the burgers were produced by two processing plants in Ireland, Liffey Meats and Silvercrest Foods, and Dalepak Hambleton in the UK.

In nine of the 10 burger samples from the four retailers, and from the Irish chain Dunnes Stores, horse DNA was found at very low levels. However, in one sample, from Tesco, the level of positive DNA indicated horsemeat accounted for 29% relative to the beef content.

“Every year over 100,000 American horses are transported to Canada and Mexico to be slaughtered and their meat shipped to Europe for human consumption.
Horse meat is considered a delicacy in Europe costing around $20. per pound.”

“The horses from America (Canada & Mexico) that are slaughtered for food are race horses, show horses, trail horses, companions and pets.
Horse meat in America is considered taboo.
Horses are mostly considered pets in America thus the taboo for eating its meat.”

The San Diego Zoo buys a product called Nebraska Loaf. It is ground up horse with skin, bones, everything included. It is fed to the lions, tigers, and leopards. I suspect that some of the thoroughbreds from the Del Mar Racetrack wind up at the zoo.

.
Horse meat is sold by special horse butchers and the best smoked meat anywhere is made of horse meat. All deep red meat without a trace of fat.

All pretty expensive meat and purchased only by the well-to-dos.

I remember Nikita Khrushchev telling the Russians that horse meat was good. Also said he would have starved to death during WWII if not for spam.

So these burger eaters should be tracked down and charged extra for the burgers that contained the high priced horse meat!

I, myself wouldn’t knowingly eat it - and I eat just about anything that doesn’t eat me first, LOL!

Can’t get past how beautiful horses are. I also can’t eat coyote or wolf - too close to a dog for me. I’m raising my first steer for butchering. His name is, ‘Dinner’ and he’s still WAY too cute to eat, IMHO. Supposedly I’ll get past that when he’s big and ornery next year. We shall see. He p*ssed on me the other day...that’s not helping his chances!

I’ve eaten guinea pig, snake, rabbit, squirrel, bear, venison, elk, moose, raccoon, bobcat, ostrich, buffalo, alligator & turtle.

Who thought to eat the first lobster, I wonder? LOL!

From the site

There are reasons you might consider selling meat from race horses, show horses and pets as cruelty to the humans that eat itcThis is because most everyone in the horse meat industry is well aware of the fact that the horses being slaughtered have unknown histories.

As if every cow has an guarantee tag/sarc.

As a farming family we witness these loving pet owners aren't so fond of spending hundreds of dollars every week on these "hay burners" when the price of hay, grain goes up.

And with a willingly blind eye, sell, give away or abandon these creatures when the love/novelty wears off.

Its painful to see the hypocrisy....

During the meat shortages during the Vietnam war, horse meat made a pretty good breakout during under Nixon.

I was surprised to see it fade away again so easily.
