Horses off the track may have Bute, Salix, and or other medications in their systems when they’re processed.

And some cows have growth hormones, assorted antibiotics in them, whether or not they need them and let's not forget some getting protein in their processed feed from...."recycled cattle" (mad cow disease, anyone?)

None of we used on our livestock(we eat our own product) but we have heard of it being used from less scrupulous farmers and feedlots.

Some horses just don’t have a future. I would rather they ride a few hours to a well-regulated US plant rather than get trucked for days out of the country.

Right. At least in the US, there is a chance the regulations of miminal humane treatment is expected. In Mexico, it's potluck.

A barely servicible rig(that was cited before as unsafe. but the title was transferred to a "new" owner/operater) filled with such poor animals, jacknifed just outside of Nashville(Tennesee) Turns out the bottom of the tantum trailer the horses were illegally transported was so rusted out it collapsed after hitting a bump,(at speed) spilling the poor beasts onto the freeway.

And yes it was headed to Mexico...

This is MY first go-round with home-grown beef, so I’m wondering how *I* will react when the time comes.

While raising a single animal is a bit different from raising a herd(it is more like a pet), just give it as good a life as you can and keep saying to yourself; if it was in the wild it would most likely be dead already and it's end wouldn't be quick(anyone who has watched a nature show can attest to that)

Plus, corn fed beef is delicious!!!(Ymmmmmmmmm!!!)

it’s different when you raise them. they have a face and they look at you.

Even in a herd you can and do get attached somewhat to the bulls and cows that been good to you at increasing the herd(the less "productive" get traded off or turned into hamburger)

It does tug at your heartstrings a bit but you know you have mouths to feed and have to maintain a successful business, so you sell her while she still has value(meat on her bones).

But that's the nature of farming and ranching..

Yep, though I don’t know what kind of damage may result from growth hormones and rest. I know I wouldn’t want to take Bute unless I’d been shot!

Some here might think that was a joke, but people were eating horse meat by the end of the Vietnam war and the Nixon presidency..

Who ate the first one?

Somebody who was watching a seal dine, of course. They said, If it’s good enough for them, they’re good enough for me too.

The two best places for on the shell oysters that I know of is Acme House or Felix’s in New Orleans. My wife is trying to get me to call for a plane. LOL I guess she doesn’t want to cook dinner tonite.

The only thing wrong with horse meat is PETA types thinking they are pets!

One would probably taste as good (or bad) as the other. Never tried either one.

WRONG answer. I've eaten at Acme and my grilled ersters were BURNT and dry!

IMHO, in New Orleans, it's Drago's grilled oysters that bring me back often. Butter, garlic, panco crumb, (and a little more stuff) spooned onto the oyster half, grilled about 1500 degrees or so, and served with crusty bread to sop with...

I do it myself on my Weber 3 burner gas grill at around 700 degrees...!

Drago’s Style Charbroiled Oysters Recipe

The Sauce:

1 Stick Unsalted Butter, very soft

1 Pinch Kosher Salt

1 tsp Freshly Ground Black Pepper

1 Tbsp Minced Garlic

4 Tbsp Pecorino Romano

1 pinch Cayenne

1 pinch White Pepper

1 Spritz Lemon Juice

1 tsp Minced Italian Parsley
