Nanny Bloomberg Takes Away Hospital Painkillers

Thank goodness government is getting more involved in health care so we can finally put a stop to sick and injured people using too many painkillers.

New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg announced this week that the city is going to sharply restrict supplies of painkillers at the city’s emergency rooms to combat a rampant addiction problem.

Yours, not his.

I have to clarify that point, because otherwise you may have the impression that “Nanny Michael” is addicted to power, and being a bit of a bully. …

“The city hospitals we control,” he said Friday in response to critics, “so … we’re going to do it and we’re urging all of the other hospitals to do it, voluntary guidelines. Somebody said, oh, somebody wrote, ‘Oh then maybe there won’t be enough painkillers for the poor who use the emergency rooms as their primary care doctor.’

“Number one, there’s no evidence of that. Number two, supposing it is really true, so you didn’t get enough painkillers and you did have to suffer a little bit. The other side of the coin is people are dying and there’s nothing perfect. … Come on, this is a very big problem.”

This very big problem, according to Bloomberg, is that people with afflictions like broken bones are being prescribed more painkillers than they need, and that leads to them either getting addicted, selling the drugs on the street or giving them to kids to get high.

I assume he “knows” this because of his own sordid past, during which he lived in a box on the mean streets doing Vicadin and getting to know all the Oxycontin dealers by first name.

“If you break a leg, you’re going to be in pain, nothing wrong with getting something that reduces the pain. But if you get 20 days’ worth of pills and you only need them three days, there’s 17 days sitting there. Invariably some of the kids are going to find them, or you’re going to take them and get you addicted.”

I had a lot of liberal teachers growing up, and I recall being taught that the reason our criminal justice system presumed innocence is because it is better that one criminal go free than that an innocent man be imprisoned.

Shouldn’t there be a similar principle in medicine? It’s better to risk one person getting too many painkillers than that someone who needs them should go wanting?

But Bloomberg has long since proved that nothing can happen in New York without him getting a slice of it. He has already broken the backs of the trans fat mafia and super-size soda pimps; it’s high time to go after the black market painkiller trade.

According to Bloomberg, the overprescription of painkillers has led to a rise in violent crimes as well, as no-goods have been hanging around pharmacies to ambush patients.

“You see there’s a lot more hold-ups of pharmacies, people getting held up as they walk out of pharmacies. What are they all about? They’re not trying to steal your shaving cream or toothpaste at the point of a gun. They want these drugs.”

Of course, the city could allow people to carry guns to defend themselves, but that would be too easy and would allow people to be responsible for themselves.

Much better to ban medicine. Besides, where’s the fun of electing a liberal mayor if you can’t leave sick people writhing in agony?

Maybe next week, the city can ban hospital food. Wouldn’t want patients getting fat or selling Jell-O cups on the black market.

Must be a treat for people of NYC to wake up each morning to learn what “The One Wannabe” has decreed for the day.

Apparently they like it. They keep electing the statist a$$hole busybody.

There is no difference between Republican and Democrat.

They are two factions, a collection evil degenerate baby killing communists on one side and elitist blue blood country clubbers crony capitalists on the other, who only have elections to decide who gets to divide up and spend the money extorted from the working man by the IRS.

There will never be any Solutions coming from Washington DC because Washington DC is the Problem.

The only thing that will come from DC is more taxes and less freedom.

The political class doesn’t give a rats ass about anything other than staying in power by any means necessary and serving 5 years to get a federal Congressional pension for life.

There is never a recession in DC, they skim off the the money they steal from workers paychecks every week and figure out new and ever more outlandish ways to waste it.

Every day they hire hundreds of new bureaucrats for life terms starting at salaries of $90-135K to sit around and figure out ways to steal more of our cash.

Their propaganda wing in the press reports none of this.

There is no greater threat to the Prosperity, Security and Freedom of the American citizen than the federal apparatus in DC.

The apparatus cannot be reformed, only destroyed.

The Federal capital must be rotated amongst the states, and allowed to convene for no more than 21 days in any given year.

We are slaves to the Washingtonians, it’s time to recognize the enemy within and come up with creative ways to defeat them.

Its time for someone like Palin or West to publicly break with the blue blood banker faction of the Washingtonians that call themselves “Republicans” and start a campaign to have all registered members of that party throughout the nation resign en masse.

Declare war on DC, start a new party larger in size than the GOP for real Americans, and recruit candidates who will go to DC not to reform or solve problems but to destroy the federal apparatus.

It’s time to start calling out the rabid baby killers, trade unionists, sex perverts, trial lawyers, communists , race baiters, lobbyists , apparatchiks, propagandists in the press, gun grabbers, and imbeciles that pollute DC and the State Capitols and their supporters that live amongst us for what they are, disgusting degenerate evil parasites that must be stopped.

Eliminate tax withholding, no new hiring of federal employees, rotate the Capital amongst the states and if necessary break up the Republic and form new nations on this continent.

when you go into a health center, there are graphs asking you what level of pain your in, and aqn ‘oath’ that states that there is no need to suffer frorm pain and that there are many medicatiosn to prevent the pain or lessen it and lal you need do is ask-

The chart shoudl now read “Please indicate on a scale of 1-10 how much pain your in- not that we give a !@$@#$!@# anymore, but tell us anyways’ and ‘it doesn’t matter how much pain your in- We now reneg on our oath to ‘do no harm’ and to make patients comfortable- you’re in pain- big friggin deal, deal with it!’ (of course htese docs and health personell will take pain meds themselves when they feel the slightest discomfort, but will not give htem to peopel with ruptured disks-

I say we form a group called Americans Dissin’ A-Hole Mayors (ADAM) or something like that...to combat the Gun Control Fascists like Bloomberg. Directly go after Gun Control Nazi mayors in conjunction with gun rights groups

“Any word yet on when Bloomberg will take away food stamps from 400-lb women who cause sidewalk concrete to cave in?”
//////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////

That’s a silly question, obviously they will just add rebar and another four inches of concrete. Can’t you figure anything out?

A great master once explained it something like this, I apologize in advance for any misquote...THE LEGITIMATE FUNCTION OF GOVERNMENT IS TO PROTECT THE CITIZENRY FROM CRIME BUT INEVITABLY THE GOVERNMENT USURPS THE FUNCTION OF THE CRIMINAL AND BECOMES A GREATER DANGER TO THE CITIZENRY THAN THE CRIMINAL WOULD EVER BE.

So has it always been, so will it always be.

Got a bunch of painkillers for my shoulder surgery. Took 4 because they mess with my head so much that I’d rather deal with the pain.

Same with me. Broke 4 ribs in 7 places up high in my back in August. They had to morphine me up to get me onto the ambulance gurney, then once I had the diagnosis, they did nothing.

Took 4 of the 30 Vicodin they gave me, then decided I just didn't want to sit and drool and watch the sun race across the sky.

The worst was the muscle relaxants. I took one of those. Turned me into a mean, psychotic, angry sumbitch (although some would argue that I was that all along).

After that, I just decided to gut it up and live with it.

No, I am not a drug warrior. I think that criminalizing personal behavior is stupid and unAmerican. Also I am tired of my tax money being wasted on 1/2 of our prison population that is there for small scale drug activity.

I believe the article gave the example of someone with a broken leg (bone?) being given a 20 day supply of drugs when the pain would only be significant for a few days. I have had a broken metacarpel (hand bone), on one occasion. I think I was given 2 days worth of pain killer which was enough. More recently I was in a car accident and had 11 broken ribs and a punctured lung. While hospitalized for 4 days had 2 days of heavy meds, 2 days of lesser meds, and for the plane ride home was given demarol, and was carrying a box which was sucking air out of my pleural cavity. Unfortunately, we had an unexpected landing and transfer to a different plane. I was late getting home and driven to the doctor to have the line pulled out of my chest. I was really hurting and pulling the line out hurt like hexx. Then I was given another 2 or 3 days of medium pain killers, went straight to bed and did not hurt much so long as I moved very carefully. I would NOT have approved of someone being given an unsupervised 20 day supply of the heavy meds I had the first several days.

I had a friend, now dead, who became addicted because of heavy meds after having legs partially crushed in an accident. Unfortunately, people most likely to become addicted are people who are in deep emotional pain, who accidentally discover that these meds kill their emotional as well as physical pain. This man once came to my door in the middle of the night and begged me to get him into a hospital to detox. I called a psychologist friend of mine who had him committed on a 72 hour hold. This psychologist often wrote family evaluation reports for child custody cases. After he met my friend’s family, he said this guy had the “most malignant mother” he had ever met. Needless to say the family quickly got my friend out of the hospital to continue on his self destructive path.

See my detailed response at Comment #31. People who need drugs also need to be supervised, not given an unsupervised 20 day supply.

I’m not sure that’s a good enough case for Mr. Bloomberg to ration out painkillers to city hospitals. Eventually, somebody will come into the ER in massive pain, and there simply won’t be enough painkillers for him because the ER is approaching its government-imposed limit.

Is he actually rationing them to hospitals, or advising hospitals to follow stricter guidelines in how many days supply they give out to walk-ins?

Well, the way the article puts it, he sounds like he’s going to restrict the amount of painkillers at the city hospitals, while asking the private hospitals to follow guidelines in restricting them.
