Scott Compton, a South Carolina high school teacher, is facing possible dismissal by his school board for stomping on an American flag in three of his classes last month.
Compton, who teaches honors English at Chapin High School, has been with the school for seven years, but the tenure of his job is now in question as the Lexington-Richland 5 school board will decide whether or not to dismiss the teacher for his actions.
...
"He drew a couple of symbols, like one of them was a cross, and he said, 'What does this represent?' and everybody said, 'Christianity,'" said Copeland.
"Then he proceeds to take down the American flag, and said, 'This is a symbol, but it's only a piece of cloth. It doesn't mean anything,' and then he throws it down on the floor and then stomps on it, repeatedly."
...
The future of Compton's teaching career is now in the hands of the school board.
"The superintendent thought the best course of action for Compton is termination," Bounds told ABC News. "But the case has to go to the local board and they will ultimately decide whether or not to support the superintendent's decision."

Maybe if he would have stuck to teaching ENGLISH in his ENGLISH class, he’d still be teaching.
To: george76
They will probably give him a raise.

Since it is a public school, I wouldn’t mind if he was fired (as a workfare recipient he shouldn’t bite the hand that feeds). People who want to do this stuff might find a bit more flexibility in private schools (where they retain the right to do as they wish).

Good. Stupidity is supposed to hurt.
That is a key problem with modern society. Not only does stupidity not hurt, its often rewarded by the System. On the other hand, those of us who are responsible adults end up taking it in the shorts.

This story soft pedals his liberalism. Yesterday, another story about this portrayed him as a very liberal person who “wore it on his sleeve”. That probably means his classes involved indoctrination instead of learning.

Who the heck does this guy think he is: Bill Ayers?
To: george76
Well, maybe we should be stomping on him, instead. He’s just a symbol, he doesn’t mean anything...
How about we stomp on his powder-blue Prius with its Obama sticker? It’s just a symbol, it doesn’t mean anything...

The reminds me of "The Children's Story".
At the end the teacher tears up an American Flag and gives a piece to each of the kids.

He was apparently trying to make the point that they symbol is not the thing symbolized, and therefore that maltreatment of the symbol is meaningless.
He's basically an iconoclast; mohammedanism (among other religious and philosophical movements) teaches this.
Many folks disagree. They hold that how one treats the symbol indicates how one would treat the thing symbolized if one had the power to do so. It also indicates one's attitude toward the thing symbolized. Contemptuous treatment of the symbol (the Flag, in this instance) indicates contempt for the United States, and a willingness to maltreat the USA if one had the power to do so.
Folks have been known to hang, burn, tar-and-feather politicians 'in effigy'. Nobody mistakes the meaning of the act.

Bill Ayers, admitted marxist terrorist, cop killer and bomber, got off on a technicality. His organization was infiltrated by an undercover FBI agent, Larry Grathwohl, who reported that Ayers and company were actively plotting the slaughter of 25 million Americans. Ayers held in his home, the very first fundraiser for Obama during his very first run for office. Ayers has publicly admitted to ghostwriting Obama's "Dreams From My Father". The name "William Ayers" has appeared on White House visitor logs at least twice, of course white house spokesmen claim it was a "different" Bill Ayers.

In both cases (stomping him, stomping his prius) you suggest transferring the contemptuous treatment from a symbol to the thing symbolized.
Now ... if we used his picture for a dartboard, or posted an 0bama sticker in a urinal, or trampled pictures of a prius ...
Or, to get closer to the mark, if we dragged a rainbow "fag-flag" through the mud ...
We would be doing to him what he is doing to us Patriotic Americans.

An American flag and a Christian cross — he stomps on the flag to promote free thinking? What a load. That is about the most conformist thing he could do. What about a picture of Obama or an Islamic crescent? That would be free thinking. But no, that would be insensitive and racist. This POS deserves to be fired.
