Law enforcement officials from a New York region where a local paper published a map identifying gun owners say prisoners are using the information to intimidate guards.

Rockland County Sheriff Louis Falco, who spoke at a news conference flanked by other county officials, said the Journal News' decision to post an online map of names and addresses of handgun owners Dec. 23 has put law enforcement officers in danger.

"They have inmates coming up to them and telling them exactly where they live. That's not acceptable to me," Falco said, according to Newsday.

Are prison guards required to have handgun permits ? I thought they would be exempt as other state law enforcement.

Prison guards are required to qualify as “peace officers.” That means they are, at least in my state, pistol permit holders of the “at work” variety. Some permits only “allow” one to possess a pistol in the discharge of his employment.

The newspaper is owned by Gannett. Who also owns US Today. It is not just a small town newspaper that is doing this.

The Gannett rag in this area is liberal and anti-gun. It keeps shrinking in size year by year.
