Several years ago I drew plans for a porch and a deck above it, went to permits, was told it needed to support 50 lbs per square foot, not 25 lbs. I contacted an engineer, had him advise me where I should add additional strength, revised the drawings, got the permits and built it with some help from a kid I hired to help lift the heavier 2 x 8s. Oh, and I was 70 at the time.
