NEW YORK (Reuters) - A suburban New York newspaper that sparked an uproar among gun enthusiasts by publishing names and addresses of residents holding pistol permits is now planning to publish even more identities of permit-toting locals.

Further names and addresses will be added as they become available to a map originally published on December 24 in the White Plains, New York-based Journal News, the newspaper said.

The original map listed thousands of pistol permit holders in suburban Westchester and Rockland counties just north of New York City.

Along with an article entitled "The gun owner next door: What you don't know about the weapons in your neighborhood," the map was compiled in response to the December 14 shooting deaths of 26 children and adults in Newtown, Connecticut, editors of the Gannett Corp.-owned newspaper said.

“Public records. Hmmmm. Like divorce, DUIs and any other arrests? Could get interesting.”

“Maybe a regular column featuring food stamp recipients would be fair.”

Or list how many newspaper staff are delinquent on their student loans, alimony, child support, etc.

The newspaper needs to realize that it has only a limited number of staff researchers.

Dan Rather was unable to foresee “Buckhead” and the Pajamas Media. That and his hubris was his downfall.

Where does this stuff stop?

What ever they get they are asking for. Yes, it's sad but journolists don't think of consequences for their actions.

They want to have criminals to know where not to go to invade a home (or to go well armed and kill the gun owner and his family and steal his guns) and don't mind setting up people that use their Right To Keep And Bear Arms.

So they set themselves to be venerable to robbery and great bodily harm.

It's on them.

Didja see the map?

Gannett's a disgrace.

About a decade ago, the local Gannett rag, under local political pressure, fired a reporter that insisted on attended a public meeting that was excluding [mostly] white males.

He reported on the violation of the law, and the local pols didn't appreciate the Sun shining on them.

He reached an undisclosed settlement with Gannett over the unjustified termination.

re:
"Someone will do the research and pull something from these maps that the so-called newspaper isn’t gonna like very much."
Perhaps this map serves as a fishing expedition of sorts after all. It has been reported that The Journal News posted the map in response to the Sandy Hook massacre.

If that was the paper's motivation, it suggests they were hoping that readers would check their neighborhoods and follow up with concerns if any of the licenced hand gun owners residences also housed individuals with mental illness given the high frequency reportage of Adam Lanza's mental deficiencies and alleged access to his mother's weapons. Despite the fact that 20 year old Adam Lanza was reported to have been of above-average or high intelligence, which also suggests that as a determined hostile, he didn't necessarily wait for permission to use his mother's weapons, given his mother was the first fatality.

It's not difficult to suggest these gestapo like tactics have multiple nefarious goals beyond intimidation (failed), especially since the map reveals the flags extend well outside of the two - three counties originally mentioned. Simply zoom out and note the additional flags outside of that limited region of NY. The points flagged in Texas and California appear to have Westchester NY addresses. Are these attempts to reveal where the wealthier multiple home-owners have additional addresses?

The Journal News appears to be unfamiliar with the law of unintended consequences. Some lessons are best learned the hard way.

Yup, well said.

You'd think they would get it now that their middle to upperclass homes' addresses have been outed in response to their outing gunowners.

One poster up thread said something like, How do I get on the gunowners list? LOL

They already have Most Wanted posters for unpaid child support. Delaware is one that post these along with amount owed.

Publish all the names and addresses of the paper’s entire staff. Explain that none of these people have any firearms and promise not to interfere with any criminals who may find them easy targets.

Likewise all the people outed can find out which neighbors aren’t armed and set up the appropriate signs, if they start getting grief (my neighbor is unarmed I won’t stop you if you rob them)....

They could get sued easily for this. If anyone dies and the criminal mentions these articles are how they targeted victims, for one.

Other reasons - because there may be people in hiding from spouses or people trying to hurt them.

“how do I make my records private?”

Ask Obama he’s pretty good at doing just that.

I think a few calls at 3AM eastern time are in order, just to ensure they are OK. Perhaps a few drive bys too and check the doors too.
