The NRA plan is so stupid that 1/3rd of all public schools already use it
The National Review ^ | 12/24/12 | Via New York Times:

[. . .] Nationwide, at least 23,000 schools — about one-third of all public schools — already had armed security on staff as of the most recent data, for the 2009-10 school year, and a number of states and districts that do not use them have begun discussing the idea in recent days. . .

Plus the NRA plan was much more comprehensive than just armed guards.

I read this morning that the school Obama’s daughters go to has 11 armed guards.

And that doesn't include the Secret Service guys.

The children of politicians are much more important than everyone else,s children, of course. (Just like their parents who are exempt from Obamacare.) They get school choice while other kids can't. They get multiple armed guards to protect them, but other kids don't.

Yes, the Obamakids go to Sidwell Friends School, run by the Quakers. Quakers are pacifists. Some do not believe in self-defense, but I guess it is OK to hire someone else to protect you, eh?

The simple fact is that guards are little more than an obstacle to be avoided. In fact a lot of Detroit school shootings happen at bus stops where there is no danger of encountering the guard.

Simply eliminating the gun free zones will be at least as effective as armed guards. If a few school staff choose to be discretely armed, its as much deterrent as anything.

My truly rural Alma Mater sprawls over a considerable area and its a small school compared to many. There are also two other school smaller school buildings in the district.

The Sandy Hook shootings took around 3 minutes. If the same were to happen at my old school, the guard would have to be right on top of it to prevent it.

When it comes right down to it, most school shootings happen at inner city schools and only amount to a couple percent of the 100,000 + schools in this country. Mass shootings amount to a tiny fraction of a percent.

My school has a couple of armed SROs. But I’d feel better if the law said I could legally carry there.

That strikes me as a very good idea. Many small towns have relatively small pollce forces and compensation for those officers already amounts to a good part of the budget for such towns. Having an assistant principal, or similar school officer, with a CCW permit who’s also been trained to respond to a potential shooter situation, would provide the necessary protection at a far lower cost.

There are enough able bodied retirees in this country who would volunteer their time to protect every school in the country every hour there are kids there.

I have some free time and I’d certainly be one of them. Think about how much money it would save too.

Ok...how many of these mass killings have happened at these armed schools?

Columbine High School had armed security guards. They were trained in the event of a shooting to call 911 and wait for police response. Police response was trained to establish a perimeter and wait for SWAT. By the time SWAT entered the building nearly two hours after the shooting began, there were 13 dead, 24 injured, and Kliebold and Harris had committed suicide.

It takes more than armed guards, it takes the proper training and mindset to stop the violence as soon as possible.

Oh, and this was during the Clinton-era Assault Weapon ban that also banned "high capacity" magazines. Harris had a Hi-Point 9mm carbine (a rifle that shoots pistol-caliber ammunition) with thirteen 10 round magazines, and shot a total of 96 times.
