The nurse who committed suicide after answering a hoax phone call about the Duchess of Cambridge made two attempts to kill herself last winter, and had been prescribed antidepressants.
Jacintha Saldanha, who took her own life days after the call from Australian DJs pretending to be the Queen and Prince Charles, attempted to commit suicide last December with an overdose of pills during a family visit to India. She survived after being rushed to hospital, but tried to commit suicide again just nine days later by apparently jumping from a building.
Although Saldanhas family have previously said she did not have a history of depression, new reports suggest she has been battling the condition since at least December last year.

Oh well that’s OK then, never mind.
If this is true, what in the hell was she doing being around Kate Middleton?
That would explain it, more than the phone call. The hoax call pushed into action what was already there.
“Never let a crisis go to waste...”
Crack-down on Rush and people like him, uh-huh.
They realllly don’t want us to hear the truth about this poor woman; “safe speech” and all that...
And her husband and daughter stood there telling the world how much they’ll miss their mother, while not a single tear was shed and they showed as much emotion as if they had lost the family cat. No, let me make a correction, they would have been more upset if the family cat was lost. They both knew her death had nothing to do with the telephone call she put through to the nurse in the ward.
But they didn’t want to jeopordize the flow of sympathy and donations, and the potential to sue the hospital.
She wasn’t around anyone, she took the phone call at a switchboard and passed it through to the ward nurse, who answered the call.
I think most of us questioned the motive...."suicide because of a phone call"?????
We were right.
Taking telephone calls and asking ‘to whom did you wish to speak’ probably wouldn’t have placed her into a position where the question of her mental health ever arose. She would hardly have told her employer at interview, btw, I attempted suicide twice when I was overseas...I bet she had mastered a beautiful english accent and that was all that mattered.
That’s a real thumbs up for Royal Security and the British National Health System.
Attempted suicide has been recognized for decades as a risk factor for potential violence, murder, drug addiction, and mental illness.
And this woman was apparently sitting alone in the room with Kate while the Princess slept?
Her death is tragic, but no one - including her family - should have allowed her to be assigned to Kate’s nursing staff in the first place.
I thought the suicide WAS the ward nurse.
The switchboard operator committed suicide and the disc jockeys are being blamed?
Wow, that's absurd.
I wonder how her employer treated her after the flub more than the prank call.
Her title was Royal Nurse, not receptionist.
Am I missing something?
Do u know where this “switchboard” was located?
She put the call through to the ward nurse who answered the questions from the callers, she wasn’t IN the ward, her function was to answer the telephone, she might have been a nurse, but she wasn’t nursing, she was answering calls to the hospital - it’s been like extracting hen’s teeth to get information out of the Press on this one.
Where the switchboard was located probably has no bearing on this what-so-ever.
And she wasn’t a ‘Royal Nurse’ she might have been a ‘nurse’ but the title ROYAL comes from the NAME OF THE HOSPITAL.
That doesn’t mean she nursed royals.
That nurse revealed confidential medical information about the pregnant Duchess, who was being treated at the hospital for acute morning sickness. The call was broadcast in Australia and made headlines around the world.

That paints a different picture doesn’t it? More drug side affects? Is the treatment worse than the disease. I suspect there will be more to come about this. At least when she killed it was only herself and not patients or innocent children.
Some of the comments here aggravate me considerably. Arguing that a suicide attempt makes us worthless in our profession?
I know wonderful women who have had difficult periods in their life when they wanted to escape the pain in their life, and how they managed to overcome those difficulties.
Arguing that we are ‘damaged’ beyond all repair is exactly the thing that drives people in despair to know tha they will never be ‘ok’ and that there is no hope.
I think it might have more to do with two suicide attempts that took place while she was overseas, and it seems her employer didn’t know about that until after the third attempt succeeded.
Don’t you think that had they known, they might have made attempts to help her deal with her depression?
And if they knew, perhaps placing her in a position like answering the telephone was one day they were dealing with her mental problems, which, as she was surrounded by health professionals, might have been managements way of dealing with her condition...there’s too much we do not know.
Like who was treating her, what medication was she taking, was the hospital aware of what ailed her?
My guess is they didn’t know because she told them nothing.
The reason she told them nothing is because if she did tell them something, she would be regarded as a pariah, as some of the posters here have done, who would have lost her job and everything she did have to live for. :(
Socialized medicine?
Just think, if Kate Middleton gets a foreign nurse guess what your mother and father are going to get.
