A Marine veteran jailed for months in Mexico after trying to carry a family heirloom shotgun across the border has been freed, U.S. officials and his lawyer said late Friday.

The attorney for 27-year-old Jon Hammar tweeted Friday night that his client had been released from a detention center in Matamoros, Mexico. “Jon is out, going home!” Eddie Varon Levy tweeted. …

An aide to a legal representative of the Mexican attorney general’s office had told U.S. Sen. Bill Nelson’s staff about the pending release after the Florida Democrat’s office got word from Hammar’s mother, according to a press release from Nelson's office. … A defense lawyer said Mexican authorities determined there was no intent to commit a crime, Nelson’s office said. The senator was among a handful of elected officials who urged the State Department to help get Hammar out of Mexico. His family had said he was being held in isolation after threats to his safety were received. …

No kidding, ditto. The things I did then.... Nothing illegal that I know of, but crazy like mountain biking skinny trails all alone in Alaska, jumping off cliffs, hitchhiking (where it was legal)....

I was hassled at many border checkpoints too, each time, not having done anything wrong.

I can definitely understand how this poor Marine ended up in this situation. The holier-than-thous, on the other hand...

I find that as I get older, I don’t get “wiser”, but I sure get less judgmental.(ha.) Guess I’m worried about casting that first stone more now.

Maybe its just that you see more and more of all kinds of situations that people find themselves ( and yourself) in that you never thought would happen.
And when it comes to combat troops, I probably do over budget.

this wasn’t an accident in similar manner to ie ‘oops i forgot that was in the car’.

some time after i heard about this incident, i listened to a report [on bill o riley?] that in so many memory hazy words stated that this marine had completed & possessed all pertinent paperwork required by, & necessary to, cross into mexico with said firearm.

said marine prepared & did all this legal homework & paperwork pre border crossing. & therein lies the problem, which resides with matamoros leos entirely. evidently mexican authorities there in matamoros didn’t care if the gringo was in compliance with their legal procedures.

which begs the question, what was their intention, purpose etc. in arresting him ? well, if their purpose was to make an example of a law abiding American citizen so that the rest of us would know what to expect from matamoros authorities, it has served them well. there now exists no reason to trust mexican law enforcement even when their procedures are complied with.

is mexico an outlaw state ??

just who is in charge down there & what the heck is their problem ?

i say racism & sour grapes.

What are the lessons learned from this incident ladies & gentlemen: Just because a United States customs official tells you its ok doesn’t mean that the Mexican customs official will agree .

Mexico is a fast approaching failed state were the govt. is notoriously corrupt.

Trusting Mexican govt. officials is not a wise thing to do .

Trying to take firearms as an American after Operation Fast & Furious is idiotic the Mexicans are pissed & rightly so & are looking for payback.

Yes, but the only thing stupider than entering Mexico with a gun, is entering Mexico without a gun.
