A Marine veteran jailed for months in Mexico after trying to carry a family heirloom shotgun across the border has been freed, U.S. officials and his lawyer said late Friday.
The attorney for 27-year-old Jon Hammar tweeted Friday night that his client had been released from a detention center in Matamoros, Mexico. Jon is out, going home! Eddie Varon Levy tweeted.
An aide to a legal representative of the Mexican attorney generals office had told U.S. Sen. Bill Nelsons staff about the pending release after the Florida Democrats office got word from Hammars mother, according to a press release from Nelson's office.
A defense lawyer said Mexican authorities determined there was no intent to commit a crime, Nelsons office said. The senator was among a handful of elected officials who urged the State Department to help get Hammar out of Mexico. His family had said he was being held in isolation after threats to his safety were received.

Why aren’t the libtards/socialists/totalitarians screaming that he should be kept in jail? Will he have to wear an electronic tether?
I’m extremely glad this fine man is being released. He was s damned fool to bring a firearm into that third world hellhole
Shouldn’t this be in BREAKING NEWS?
Great news.
Brought about in great degree because of relentless activism by the citizen media.
Now he needs to get a few of his Marine buddies and then go back and Chuck Norris the place.
Another indication that Mexico has dollar signs dancing in its head---and is salivating for US tax dollars.
It's sickening that the US is financing Mexico's "pressure groups"---para-military Mexican lawbreakers pouring over the border with nothing but mayhem in mind.

Latino Groups Warn Congress to Fix Immigration.... or Else
NY Times ^ | December 17, 2012 | Julia Preston / FR Posted by Bon of Babble
WASHINGTON The nations largest Latino organizations warned Congress on Wednesday that they will keep a report card during the immigration debate next year, with plans to mobilize their voters against lawmakers who do not support a comprehensive immigration bill. Make no mistake, we will be watching, said Eliseo Medina, international secretary-treasurer of the Service Employees International Union, which led one of the most extensive Latino voter drives. The report card will show who stood with us and who stood against us on immigration reform, Mr. Medina said."(Excerpt) Read more at thecaucus.blogs.nytimes.com ...

More stupidity from the Third World infecting our culture. Stupids do not know how to navigate democracy and are undermining it. The Latino Service Employees International Union should be rigorously investigated to determine (1) the source of its funding,(2) whether foreign govts subsidizee their activities, and, (3) the scope and dimension of lawreaking WRT latino vote drives.

Threats cause corrupt Mehican federales to cower in fear----but in America IT IS AGAINST THE LAW to threaten a US lawmaker----and it is illegal to use threats to pass legislation.

Yes, The People were behind his release. The Obama regime would have let them keep him, torture him, kill him, or whatever they wanted.
First mistake was going into Mexico to begin with.
I am glad the man is home, but we should remember that pretty much the same thing has happened to a Marine who took a gun into New York City.
I would bet that the New York jail is a bit more comfortable than the Mexican one, but the fact is the laws in New York are as bad as the Mexican ones.
Unless you’re a criminal enjoying the old “revolving door”, that is . . .
“First mistake was going into Mexico to begin with.”
No chit, mon.
Mexico has some beautiful and unique spots. No more. Now they’re just killing/extortion zones.
(Hey, I just had an idea. They could put up some “Killing & Extortion Free Zone” signs....)
Gun control!
Gun control!
Get ‘cher GUN CONTROL RIIIIGHT HERE! ‘Down in Mehhhiccco land wit’ all them guns Barry O “walked” over the border thanks to all that TARP $$$$$$$$$.
Now, eat sh*t GRINGOS!!!
Oh goody.
Now we can plan our vacation in fun-filled, sunny Mexico.
And the lesson?......MEXICO IS AN OUT-OF-CONTROL HELLHOLE that lacks in culture and human decency - put up a 20ft. fence and stay the the hell out of there!
Bronco, being anti-American, can’t be bothered with the plight of a single falsely imprisoned citizen.
He and his sty are now ensconsed in sunny, socialist Hawaii on their well-deserved ‘holiday’ vacation paid for with bloated, borrowed dollars.
The U.S. citizenry has been forcibly sending millions upon millions upon millions of bribery/extortion dollars to this corrupt country over the years....and those vacationing there seem blissfully unaware they're feeding the hand which is duping them.....and which is playing ALL of us for suckers.
Leni
It was an antique gun from his grandfather...the guy has PTSD having had 2 tours in Iraq...who knows his personal feelings.
THIS GUY IS NOT A “FOOL”...HE IS AN AMERICAN HERO.
Anyone, regardless of their past service, their present condition or their future aspirations, who tries to bring a firearm into Mexico is a damned fool. I don’t need all caps for that verity.
Then whoever knew that he was heading into Mexico with this weapon is the fool.
an antique gun from his grandfather
and the purpose of taking this into Mexico was what????
To shoot birds.
He said.
He knew there was a risk or he wouldn't have sought out information.
We here in Northern Mexico (San Diego to those in Rio Linda) know not to cross that border for any reason. This isn't 1980 any more.
I wish both these men a very merry Christmas and a saner, more prosperous and very healthy New Year.
Thank you,President Obama,Oh Wait.......
I am glad that everyone is so knowlegeable about the mental/emotional condition of this young Marine after two tours in combat and suffering from PTSD.Perhaps you all can go work at the VA and start diagnosing combat veterans and tell them the brilliant “What were you thinking?” after they do something the YOU wouldn’t do.
Lets leave calling this WAR HERO a “fool” to the MSM, I really don’t like to see that disparaging Monday Morning Quarterbacking here on Freeper about our troops. Soon enough we will have Kerry do that for us.
And just maybe, he did not have the perspective of wisdom that you all seem to have. This young man needs all the support he can get, not criticism that NOW is of no avail to him.
I said nothing about his mental state. I simply stated what transpired before he and his friends went across the border. Chill out and learn some facts!
Excellent post.
Well done.
Excellent post.
Well done.
Sounds like someone needs to hold his guns for him until he gets his psychiatric problems resolved.
He was a damned fool to do what hectic and I’ll bet, upon reflection, he’d agree more with me than you. I’m not detracting anything from his heroism to suggest he acted like a fool. John McCain and George McGovern were both war heroes and they were way bigger fools.
BTT
BTT
What he did was undeniably foolish. Nobody here is calling him a buffoon or democrat.
Thanks.
Its just so easy to say this young man did something foolish.
It was the tone and needless negative comments that I objected to. It was more than what I would expect On Freeper. Regardless if his act was “foolish” by some standards, this is not the time, and without further information to call him a fool.
The anger should be reserved for the Mexican govt and our Pres. who did not denounce this unlawful imprisonment and ask for his speedy release in August.
I guess now I should apologize for having strong supportive feelings about our military and being “overly sensitive” to any slights they may get.
I think the kid knew he made a big mistake even if you don’t.
My opinion is that most of the people posting here are too old to remember their 20s, and the mistakes that we all make in our youth. I’m in my 40s now, and feel like I would know not to do that (bring a gun into Mexico), but I might have acted differently at 27. Especially since he was told by some buffoon on the U.S. side that it was OK.
Excellant points....not only are they older, but ohhhhhh so much wiser.
Total know-it-alls....
:0)
It is a miracle that I made it out of my twenties,,,HA.
No kidding, ditto. The things I did then.... Nothing illegal that I know of, but crazy like mountain biking skinny trails all alone in Alaska, jumping off cliffs, hitchhiking (where it was legal)....
I was hassled at many border checkpoints too, each time, not having done anything wrong.
I can definitely understand how this poor Marine ended up in this situation. The holier-than-thous, on the other hand...
I find that as I get older, I don’t get “wiser”, but I sure get less judgmental.(ha.) Guess I’m worried about casting that first stone more now.
Maybe its just that you see more and more of all kinds of situations that people find themselves ( and yourself) in that you never thought would happen.
And when it comes to combat troops, I probably do over budget.
Good.....
Now build a 3000 Mile Wall....
Yes. Secure our border BUMP!
Thanks for the info on SEIU, Liz. DISMANTLE international totalitarian collectives FORCING/THREATENING individuals in the U.S.A.
this wasn’t an accident in similar manner to ie ‘oops i forgot that was in the car’.
some time after i heard about this incident, i listened to a report [on bill o riley?] that in so many memory hazy words stated that this marine had completed & possessed all pertinent paperwork required by, & necessary to, cross into mexico with said firearm.
said marine prepared & did all this legal homework & paperwork pre border crossing. & therein lies the problem, which resides with matamoros leos entirely. evidently mexican authorities there in matamoros didn’t care if the gringo was in compliance with their legal procedures.
which begs the question, what was their intention, purpose etc. in arresting him ? well, if their purpose was to make an example of a law abiding American citizen so that the rest of us would know what to expect from matamoros authorities, it has served them well. there now exists no reason to trust mexican law enforcement even when their procedures are complied with.
is mexico an outlaw state ??
just who is in charge down there & what the heck is their problem ?
i say racism & sour grapes.
What are the lessons learned from this incident ladies & gentlemen: Just because a United States customs official tells you its ok doesn’t mean that the Mexican customs official will agree .
Mexico is a fast approaching failed state were the govt. is notoriously corrupt.
Trusting Mexican govt. officials is not a wise thing to do .
Trying to take firearms as an American after Operation Fast & Furious is idiotic the Mexicans are pissed & rightly so & are looking for payback.
“Now build that 3000 mile wall”

Yes, but the only thing stupider than entering Mexico with a gun, is entering Mexico without a gun.
