Today, Barack Obama nominated Massachusetts Democratic Senator John Kerry for Secretary of State, and if he's confirmed, that will leave a Massachusetts Senate seat open next year.
At the same time, there just happens to be a Massachusetts Democrat going into retirement next year former head of the Banking Committee, Barney Frank. Governor Deval Patrick has got to nominate someone to fill the seat until a special election is held next year, and Frank may be the experienced pick.
Politico reports that Frank said he wouldn't rule out accepting the nomination either.
The governor ought to be free to make whatever choices he makes. In Massachusetts, youre talking about an interim, not a permanent appointment. I certainly would not take on any long-term appointment, Frank said. As for an interim thing, I think accepting offers that havent been made is kind of presumptuous.
Pressed to clarify, Frank said his answer was not a no or a yes. Rejecting an offer that hasnt been made is also presumptuous.
If Frank became Senator, even for just a little while, he'd be the 2nd openly gay Senator in U.S. history. So we'll see what happens.

will he be wearing a belt or the dog collar this time?
maybe John Fn Kerry can take him on walks.
He doesn’t need John Kerry, he has Jim Ready.
Its not like he was really going to leave anyway. 90% of congressmen leave office and become lobbyists and advisors in DC anyway.
This could be the ‘oneupmansship’ that the D’s will use to offset the R Black Senator from SC.
Then the R’s will counter with 2 Gays just to show what good sports they are....
If the “Founding Dads’” would have ANY misgivings over the outcome of their ‘Greatest Moment’ it would be the bastardization of the system and the Reps/Sens making a Part Time Job into a career or worse...
At 72, Barney Frank isn’t going to run. If he’s appointed it would only be as a placeholder until the election. And there are a lot of local politicians and hangers-on who would really want that placeholder position and title, so it’s doubtful Frank would get the appointment.
Howie Carr’s sources tell him it will be Olver.
I heard something today when Sen.Graham spoke with McCane. He said Clinton should testify and he had no doubt that she would testify next month. But, he said, when she testifies it must me as a sitting Sec. of State, not as a private citizen. I do not know if this means Graham is willing to hold up the Kerry nomination. It seems he strongly inferred it.
I thought Barney had died of AIDS. I must have him confused with someone else.
Olver is a cadaver.
What in the world is the matter with the Massachusetts voters? Gay or not, this guy is a creep of the first order.
That makes sense. They’d want to give it to a loyal party soldier. Barney was always too much of a loose cannon. His reward was being able to shoot off his mouth freely for decades and get in the papers, so the party leaders aren’t going to think he needs any more benefits.
Oh puking great......maybe there’s another housing market he can destroy!
Will he be wearing his belt?
I believe Barnyard Franks is alive and kicking.
I guess he nixed the gown for the tux.
