Following the second-worst mass shooting in American history, US Senator Dick Durbin (D-IL) said hunters and sportsmen need to "step up."
He urged them to support what he called "reasonable restrictions" on the types of weapons that can be purchased and on large ammunition magazines.
Durbin said average citizens don't need access to the kind of military-style equipment used by the gunman in Newtown, CT.
"I'm told that he was wearing body armor at the time. A question I have to ask: Why in the world does anyone need to buy body armor? I can see where the military would. I can see where the police would, Durbin said.
But when an average citizen buys body armor, you think, what kind of things are you protecting yourself against here?"
Durbin also said Illinois should be careful in responding to a court order mandating the state allow civilians to carry firearms in public.
He says the law should contain safeguards, such as a requirement that people undergo training before getting a carry permit.
Blah blah blah.
Boring.
Change the channel.
Durbin should immediately demand that his security team get rid of their guns.
1. What kind of military style weapons were used in Connecticut? I can’t recall
2. Body armor is a commercially available commodity. If a security guard can buy it and wear, so can I.
These people, that make up our government officials, prove on a continuous basis that they’re dumber than a box of rocks.
The fool Durbin is from Illinois and with all the murders occurring in Chicago he cannot understand why a civilian would need body armor? Obviously the high murder rate is because of all the law abiding citizens, right?
He’s a lying dick. Nobody was wearing any body armor except the police responders. he was wearing a nylon tactical vest that wouldn’t defeat a pellet gun. They’re purposely spreading misinformation to confuse the public.
There are already too many gun restrictions. How about addressing the inadequacies in our mental health system.
Dick, why don’t you tell us how Gun Control is working in Chicago ?
Bloomie is on Charlie Rose right now talking about gun control.
The government has them so why should the public have to stand down. Like or not The Constitution gives the people the option if not the responsibility to take the government down if it has failed the people.
Durbin knows he is on the failure list.
Only tax laws are greater in number than gun control laws. Yet the government wants to punish us with more. NO GUN CONTROL LAW IN EXISTANTANCE would have prevented what happened in CT. He could have just bought his guns from the local gangsta crowd.
Odd how so many of the worst anti-gunners are from NY. I guess New Yorkers are just freedom haters
It is not a matter of "need". It is our "right" to have weapons. When the constitution was written we gave the government certain "limited" powers.
REGULATING FIREARMS WAS NOT ONE OF THE POWERS THAT "WE" GRANTED TO THE GOVERNMENT.
Yeah. And why not? A lot of Democrat “opponents” like John Boner, are surrender monkeys. Why not the Second Amendment People also? A little bite here, a little bite there and pretty soon nothing is left.
All of these school shootings are horrific. I can’t BEGIN to imagine the grief of the parents who had to endure this especially at THIS time of year. It will be with them the rest of their lives - particularly around this Holy Season.
WE have said it all over and over again.
Criminals don’t obey laws. Only law-abiding citizens do.
Restrictive gun laws generate a nation of helpless law-abiding sheep and a well armed criminal element.
Even anti-gun Krauthammer acknowledged today that while the assault rifle ban of years back was in effect, it had no recognizable level of effect on gun violence.
Not too long ago, in ANOTHER country with restrictive gun laws - Sweden - we learned how ineffectual mere laws are in protecting innocent children from a determined maniac.
Dr. Lott showed time and again that the more guns are accessible to the law abiding public, the less likely criminals are to harass them. Rational criminals that is. Maniacs are never deterred - that’s what makes them maniacs.
The ONLY way to abate incidents like this is by putting metal detectors and armed security staff at schools and increasing over-all surveillance there. Changing laws to allow more pro-active detention and treatment of potentially dangerous personalities - particularly with younger people. Allow teachers who are willing to pass rigorous training to carry concealed firearms in a school environment.
And one thing more - do something to bring a belief in God, self-respect, decency, patriotic altruism, and personal honor to the forum of education and public life from which the very same elements calling for increased gun control have swept them.
Even THEN, EVIL, REAL EVIL, exists. Satan is NOT a medieval construct for ignorant minds. As Adam Lanza and so many of his clones have demonstrated - he exists. And there is very little we do can protect us against real evil unless we, as a society, cultivate the kind of culture which existed here years ago.
Just because they choose to live in an abominal place with restrictions on freedom at every turn, doesn’t mean the rest of us should have to.
Politicians and their most influential constituents in the shadows are really intelligent, aren’t they. [More than a little irony and sarcasm there.]
Sounds like something Stalin, Mao, Pol Pot or some other murdering tyrant would say.
Body armor control?
Has Durbin exhibited signs of early dementia before?
Is he getting a reputation for soiling himself, like Teddy Kennedy?
Durbin, he’s the typical liberal who goes after either the working producer of the country’s wealth (who creates jobs, hires people) or the law abiding citizen (who is productive in making a strong society to last) with his convoluted polices and ideas.. I tell you it’s like seeing that the losers and the deadbeats from the hippie crowd are running the government. Can we say, potheads, tax cheats, perverts, criminals, and now we have Kerry; coming up from his day of being in Vietnam..these old dried out losers had their chances..seriously. I think that our country has lost it’s moral compass. There’s mostly perversion and an overreaching of the politicians in making up rules to fit what their agenda is; which I don’t think can last. We’re here. The 60s crowd with the same old agenda. Our side just continues to go along. Those in power and in charge are either corrupt or truly weak which is causing the nation to be spiraling to a place with no soul. It’s about there.
But when an average citizen buys body armor, you think, what kind of things are you protecting yourself against here?”
Uh...You.
