“You, sir or madame, are full of crap. That murderous little brad should have been locked up in and asylum. Those kind of mental health “issues” should not be loosed upon society. Unfortunately, asylums for the insane have fallen out of fashion due to those like you who want all of society to bend to the lunatics instead of the insane being cared for in a secure environment.”

Calm down and read your own post. Our current culture would not lock him up in jail or asylum until he did something heinous; therefore, it is incumbent on the person with whom he lives to not provide him the means to do what he did. Her obligation when she kept him under her roof is to keep the environment safe.

I think this is at least one step we’re going to have to strongly consider.

Consider whatever you want. I'll not lock up or unload my firearms. If that makes me a criminal, so be it.

By making the guns readily accessible, maybe she was hoping he would end her pain and suffering and shoot himself?

Does that include PTSD?

“By making the guns readily accessible, maybe she was hoping he would end her pain and suffering and shoot himself?”

As dark as that sounds, I know parents of mentally ill and dangerous children who think that.

If we allow a law to be passed that forbids gun ownership for people who live with a suspected mentally ill person, it would only be a matter of time before the Government expanded the definition of crazy to include Preppers, Truthers, Birthers, Ultra Conservatives...

??? Either I missed it or we read different articles, but where does it say she made them readily accessible?

It says she taught him about guns and how to shoot etc., but the money quote I saw said:

“She added that Nanza was ‘meticulous’ and would ‘never leave the guns out.’ “

This kid could have threatened his mother to open the “locked cabinet” so he could get access. A locked gun case is no guarantee.

Where in this strange hit piece on the mom does anyone state the dead Mom was obsessed with guns?
The writer and headline writer peddle that lie/phony angle !
The father ran away from his son and her and left her to handle the situation !
The guy lived 50 miles away and last saw the kid in June !
Thanks to the ACLU and lib therapists it is impossible to get someone involuntarily committed before they do something like this !
The courts and judges let the mentally ill run wild and there families are powerless !

I was intending to respond to post # 1, but it was deleted for one reason or another. So i guess you are the victim.

What the media is doing is trying to focus attention and blame on everyone and thing except the individual who did the killing. Sometime in the near future, they will begin including all legitimate gun owners,Republicans, Fundlemental Christians in their guilt by association.

It is not about more gun laws. We need to address our mental health issues in this country; but she should have used common sense, you know that thing about self-regulation, and not had weapons in her house or not had her son in her house.

You are so right. MENTAL HEALTH is the real issue here.
The real common thread with all the school shootings is young men with mental health issues.
We need to be asking the question of how society can better help these young men. Drugging them and letting them spend hours alone with video games is not the answer. Parents of these troubled young men need help to find ways to mainstream them or there need to be places where they can be housed and learn to do physical labor. Something needs to be done! This issue needs to be talked about.
Instead, once again media, politicals and educators talk about guns.

Not surprised. He clearly didn’t want any interference in his plan.

When people have children with mental health issues they should not be so armed. It is not a rights issue but common sense.

Oh, it's about common sense, is it? Where have I heard that phrase before?

O.K. Who gets to define common sense? Who gets to define what are considered "mental health issues"?

Don't be a useful idiot and advocate going down that path.

The ACLU and lawyers and mental Health experts prevent follies from
Locking anyone up ! They closed all the facilities and its impossible to
Get anyone involuntarily locked up .
The police and jail do not allow this unless they do something dangerous !

If she truly was meticulous and never left the guns out, he never would have gained access to her gun safe. Remember, he tried to buy his own rifle a week earlier, but was denied. She had to have given him access to the guns. Once he had access, he shot her dead. How many mothers could ever believe their son or daughter was capable of murder?

my question is, why would anyone take a mentally ill person to a gun range and hand them a gun?
