In the racially charged America of today what makes headlines and gets people angry and making big crusades (like w Trayvon Martin) is inter-racial crime. Not crime within the black race or the white race. And contrary to what the mass media and the black& white liberal race agitators want you to believe, the crime statistics show black on white crime to be way out of proportion to white on black on black crime.

Another condition that makes the epidemic of blacks attacking innocent whites ("White Girl Bleed a Lot") is the justice system. Both the law enforcement agencies and the judicial system have been so cowed by the relentless advocacy by race hustlers like Jesse Jackson, Al Sharpton and their leftist enablers that they no longer administer punishment on an equitable basis. The well-known "document not allowed to be linked here on FR" cites irrefutable statistics revealing that the law weighs less heavily on black criminals. As you alluded to, the extreme burdens placed on George Zimmerman for his well-justified defensive actions are proof that justice has now become a respecter of color.
I'll also add that the Marxist media contributes to this poisoned atmosphere when the world is depicted upside down. Dick Wolf's "Law and Order" series is but one example. Invariably, on "L&O", the villain is a white, heterosexual, Christian male (and often his children go to private school) and the victim is typically a black. The agenda is transparent and utterly divorced from reality.
