Republican Sen. Tom Coburn (R-Okla.) told me Sunday on ABC News' "This Week" that he is willing to accept tax rate increases as a component of a fiscal cliff deal, as long as Democrats put "significant entitlement reform" on the table.
"What we ought to be working on is the other 93 percent, because even if you do what [Obama] wants to do on tax rates, you only affect 7 percent of the deficit," Coburn said. "What we have done is spend ourselves into a hole, and we're not going to raise taxes and borrow money and get out of it."
"And so will I accept a tax increase as a part of a deal to actually solve our problems? Yes," he said.
But his Republican colleague in the House, Rep. Jeb Hensarling (R-Texas), disagreed.
He said that Republicans shouldn't vote for a tax increase which they believe will harm the economy.
"No Republican wants to vote for a rate tax increase," Hensarling said. "I mean, what that is going to do, according to the National Federation of Independent Business that commissioned a study by Ernst & Young, is cost 700,000 Americans to go from having paychecks to unemployment checks."
Hensarling said that President Obama pulled a "bait and switch" on Congressional Republicans by adding a demand for tax rate increases after the election. In 2011 Obama had suggested that $1.2 trillion could be raised by closing loopholes and pursuing tax reform alone, without raising rates.
"The president, again
if he would do what he said before the election, as opposed to the bait-and-switch, what Republicans feel like is a little bit like Charlie Brown running to kick the football and Lucy pulls it away," Hensarling said.

It’s over, my friends. It’s over.
Of course they are. When did government not enrich itself? I helped Newt in 1994 and he told me once a week they would spend the getting rid of old silly laws and, stop the 3% telephone tax to fund the Spanish/American war.
They did not stop a 3% phone tax. Name anything the GOP had done for the American people.
“...put “significant entitlement reform” on the table.”
That’s it? And to think that whores at least want to see the money upfront before they get under the table.
The morons running the GOP don’t know jack about actual political power.
There’s a way to out-fox Obama even now. Agree to tax increases... and then tax the hell out of Obama’s constituency groups.
The Republicans can give Obama exactly what he claims he wants - and then structure the details so that it hits universities, hedge funds, Wall Streeters, insurance companies, and even St. Warren Buffett directly. They’ll howl like stuck pigs, but the GOP could come back and say “Well, Mr. Buffett was complaining that his taxes were too low, so we raised them... just like he asked!”
But no. The GOP adheres to their stupid “pledge” and hard-line position to play to some idiot lobby like Norquist and his merry band of know-nothings.
Me too. If old people ON THIS SITE insist that they get THEIR WELFARE (i.e., Social Security and Medicare), then YES, it’s time to start paying the bills.
I’ve given up on the concept that older conservatives give a damn about the future of this country - I’ve dealt with more than my fair share of them, ON THIS SITE, that seem to think their Social Security money is sitting in the bank somewhere, just waiting for them to withdraw it.
Sure, they know of the $16T debt...but as long as they cash out, before “cashing out”, it doesn’t make a damn bit of difference to them. So I’m HAPPY to see that Republicans are finally getting on board and, at least, trying to come up with money for these TAKERS, rather than passing it on to my kids, who had NOTHING TO DO with this mess.
Are you tired? Isn’t it time to form the Tea Party to replace a certain other party?

GOP civil war: Herman Cain calls for third party
http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-gop/2957787/posts
Of course he and the rest of the GOP old bulls will do everything
except cut spending. After all they all belong to the DC Party.
I think your post helps explain why the tea party movement was not as prominent in this year's election. Many, many seniors took to the streets to vocally oppose Obamacare, but they fully support Social Security and Medicare.
And, each day, their numbers grow.
Then pay more out of your own pocket a-hole, and leave the rest of us alone!!!
Its over for the GOP. Time to form a new party.
This is a slow motion cave.
No spine.
No cojones.
No integrity.
Bunch of worthless wimps.
TEA PARTY!!
Then it sounds like you agree with coburn in that you are OK with increasing taxes. Doesn’t matter. The dems have the votes to push through most of what they want.
So.... GOP... how are you feeling about throwing real conservatives under the bus and giving us a Sen. Donnelly and a return of Sen. McCaskill?
That worked out GREAT didn’t it?
And now we have the RINOs folding like a cheap card table. This is getting tiresome. We had 6 years of Repub Congress and POTUS in the 2000s and a chance to end deficits and eliminate the debt. These Repubs set the precendent and BHO is now running with it.
Can we just for ONCE back genuine conservatives? Herman Cain for Senate ‘14!!!
“The morons running the GOP dont know jack about actual political power.”
The Constitution gives the House control over appropriations. Also tax bills must originate in the House. All the Republicans need to do is pass a balanced budget with the taxes to fund it. Then go home. The ball will then belong to Harry Reid and Obama. They can pass the budget and send out the welfare checks. Or they can not pass and not sign the budget, the government will shut down for lack of money, and their constituents will not receive their checks. The press, the Dems, and the masses may blame the Republicans for 2 or 3 weeks but by week 4 they’ll be demanding the Senate pass and Obama sign whatever they can get. This the power play if Boehner and his majority have the guts to execute. We are two years away from the next Congressional election which is a lifetime in politics. Why not actually do something worth getting blamed for by actually starving the welfare state and putting the government on a fiscally sound footing?
Obama, Reid and Pelosi are playing hardball in a game where the Republican House has the ultimate power if they’ll just use it. Instead, the Republicans are afraid to take a little heat from the press so they will cave.
How long will conservatives continue supporting a party that hates them and will never stand up for their interests?
When I learned in the last couple of week that the GOP had signed a consent decree 30 years ago not to confront voter fraud I was shocked. This was the first I ever heard of it. This automatically makes them a charade, nothing but a straight man for the rats. They needed to dissolve the GOP as a legal entity and let something else take it’s place. And why did they agree to this in the first place?
It’s outrageous and they are nothing but a bunch of entrenched politicians maneuvering to keep their gravy train. They’re as bad as the rats.
You are correct sir. It really is over. Time to do a John Galt on all these scum bags, and next year, I am out of the country.
How about the money people have paid into social security, have the government refund every penny back to the investors, see how that would work..
I've been staggered by the number of Conservatives on this site who feel the big issue is "Can I get what's coming to me? Will Uncle Sam keep sending me the big entitlement check?"
There is no real understanding for where we are or how we got into this mess. They just want what they want. Short-sighted and selfish -- that's America!
I have fought that idea for years. I'm done fighting it. Let's roll.
Soc Securtiy benefits are more than the payments into the system. Recipients are getting somethin fer nothin
....isn’t anyone going to stop this?
Lift a feeble finger?
Verbalize a pathetic squeal?
No?
:(
I guess old people should just die now that they can’t pay 17% of their income to the SS ponzi scheme anymore.
Now that 51% of the electorate is being bought, it’s over.
I’m an elderly conservative....and I take exception to your post.
No all “old” conservatives feel the same.
No all “old” conservatives wish to cash out before cashing out.
I still work every day and make a living strong enough to not need social security, pay my taxes, and continue to pay in to social security.
I give a damn about the future of this country and it is time for younger people to understand that. We fought and died to make this country great....and many of us are not ready to give up or give in.
go learn about how the pay ins vs payouts are structured before you call anyone an idiot
learn. ignorance isn’t pretty, especially when coupled with arrogance
The handwriting is on the wall. Once again, the (R)s will accept REAL tax hikes NOW, in exchange for vague promises of spending reduction and entitlement reform “discussions” “over the next decade”.

Recipients re getting something for nothing???????
They paid in and fought and dies for the country.
et tu Brutus?
And I am willing to accept no more GOP.
How old are you?
I started mowing lawns at 10 years old, for 50 cents a pop. My first `real job’ was cleaning grocery carts and breaking down boxes at a supermarket, at age 15.
If they want to refund me the value of everything I paid into those programs, with over forty years of interest, sure.
Otherwise, ditto what you said, cannoncocker—those who say we old farts should just `write it all off’ so their children can have that money (that isn’t there anyway), well, they can go s*** in their hats.
You don't believe that, do you?
Please tell me you don't believe that.
Republican politicians are fools not to point out the
hard truth about Democrat tax increases. And, that truth
is that the Democrats know that the big money lies in
the hands of the middle class but until the upper class
has been tapped out, the middle class will not accept
a tax increase. Once the tax has been increased on the
wealthy the road is clear to raise middle class taxes.
Why is it that Obama wants a tax rate increase rather
than a closure of “loopholes” on the wealthy to ac-
complish the same thing? I believe that a tax rate
increase on the rich makes for a much more effective
visual to sell to the middle class when the Democrats
come after them. And, why is it that we seldom hear
Republicans talk about growing the economy as the best
way to increase revenues? They’re just a bunch of fools.
If they are all so eager to accept tax increases then just go over the fiscal cliff and they will get the tax increases and the spending cuts. No need to negotiate.
The GOP seems to forget that they agreed to all this last year. Now that its time to eat their peas maybe they wish they had stood firm on the last go around.
“government run healthcare”=Strawman
SS isn’t healthcare it is living expenses.
Flat tax. Remove ALL loopholes.
Eliminate corporate welfare and 90% of all foreign aid.
Cut back entitlement growth to the rate of inflation. Eliminate Departments of Energy, Commerce and Education.
Budget problem solved.
Medicare is free? Who told you that? My mother paid into it from every paycheck she ever got and now pays over $3,000 per year in premiums for her Medicare supplemental insurance. That’s over $3k that comes out of her $16k per year SS. To support two people’s entire yearly living expenses.
Where to?
Let me add that she hasn’t used her Medicare much at all. One broken wrist and a couple of emergency room visits.
Then you should have said “Medicare.”
You were attempting to conflate the Social Security program with `Obamacare,’ something everyone here opposes.
You were taking a swing at something easy.
