Sen. Jim DeMint (R-S.C.), who shocked Washington on Thursday with the announcement that he would resign his Senate seat in January to become president of the the Heritage Foundation, sent a parting shot at Speaker John Boehner (R-Ohio) over the fiscal cliff negotiations.
Im not with Boehner, DeMint said on CNNs "The Situation Room." This government doesnt need any more money, this country needs less government.
Speaker Boehners $800 billion tax hike will destroy American jobs and allow politicians in Washington to spend even more, while not reducing our $16 trillion debt by a single penny, he said in a statement. If neither party leadership is going to put forward a serious plan to balance the budget and pay down the debt, we should end this charade.

Boner needs to go as Speaker, even if if takes re-electing Pelosi in Jan.

I wonder if the Orange Pussy’s little Stalinist purge was the last straw for DeMint. It wouldn’t surprise me.
Who is replacing DeMint?
Hell no with that. We need a conservative replacement who will stand up and run against boehner. Who is it? No one will do it. If conservatives don’t have someone in the house with the balls to do that then conservatives don’t deserve to run the house.
Sounds like Tim Scott has a good shot at it - and would be a great choice:
While I think it is certainly time for Boehner to go, you are stark raving mad to surest it’s worth getting Pelosi back.
Stop what you are doing, call 911 and asked them to send someone to take you in on a mental hold. They will keep you warm, dry, feed you and fill you full of drugs to help you get through this moment of insanity.
Good for DeMint
If only DeMint would replace Boehner.
while I don’t want speaker Pelosi..
If I PM you my address will you drop the quarter on me? what you say sounds better than living through Obama in a non-drug induced state.
Wait.. If Palin was a quitter for stepping down before the end of her term what does that make DeMint?
A quitter. Hope he likes he new job. I’ll never vote for him.
Now that he’s retired from the Senate, the House Republicans should make DeMint Speaker of The House. It’s my understanding that the Speaker doesn’t HAVE to be a sitting Congressman. I wonder if getting a non-Congressman would net them an extra vote as well.
DeMint has stated many times that he was not running for re-election again in 2014 - he has said that no senator should serve more than 2 terms, so he is practicing what he preaches.
He has very little power in the senate anyway, and Tim Scott would be huge bonus as senator.
Jim DeMint is the real thing.
May he have much success at Heritage.
Pelosi can only be speaker if the democRats had control of Congress
Only Governor Nikki Haley knows.
surest = suggest.
“Wait.. If Palin was a quitter for stepping down before the end of her term what does that make DeMint?”
Possibly a strong CONSERVATIVE candidate for President. DeMint is going where he can be most effective. Building the conservative base and pulling them together as a coalition.
No racing to the left with the RINOS. Sitting under the Dems and Reed in the Senate is no a no man’s land for a conservative.
He will be much more effective at the Heritage Foundation and his voice will not be drowned out by the leftists in Washington.
Palin did the right thing too. She has been very effective since she left the Governorship.
Gee Whiz, give it a rest already. Are you still working the first job you ever had? Have you always worked at each job exactly as long as everyone else thought you should? What if you made a commitment to doing what was best for the company, and it turns out at a particular moment, you quitting was the best thing for the company? Is that still quitting? Or what if you're a commander with troops who trust your judgment, and you decide to strategically withdraw from one battle so you can regroup for a more important one? Are you still a quitter then? Even George Washington was a quitter by those standards.
Look, if we don't keep and nurture our own best talent (Palin, DeMint, etc.), who will we have left? Brainless people who dont know enough to quit a dead end when they ought to, that's who. We can't afford to be leaderless, least of all over non-issues. You give up your vote for DeMint if you must, but I promise you this; I will see that vote and raise you two more (No, not cheaters votes, persuaders votes, the good kind), just to make the point. If an army is going to win, it needs troops and it needs commanders. If we "shoot" all our own commanders, and especially those with exceptional strategic skills, how does that help us?
DeMint could have stuck around till Boner was deposed. You know. But It seems he has plans outside of DC to help the conservative movement. He was feeling like being in the senate was not enough.
There are millions and millions of us with you Jim.

Starve the beast and it will crumble.
This government doesnt need any more money, this country needs less government.
That should have been the theme of this election cycle. We could have earned a lot more votes with this message. Instead it was....the economy sucks. I can do better...and that just made it a battle of two personalities, not two ideologies.
They are ALL captured by the system.
They are all P'sOS, Romney was an absolute Republican through the whole "circus" of running...
No message, spine, fortitude and like a republican he caved on every issue, and just like McCain in 08 did not even try to win or run for that matter.
There is no difference between Dem or Repb....
It is them vs us and we are too stupid or apathetic to stand up to them
I am ready.
A $800 billion tax hike would be the undoing of America’s economy. This is money that will be taken out of free enterprise. It will be money that would go to capital now being flushed down the toilet of big government. Democrats will never use new taxes to reduce the deficit. Instead they will increase state workers and more government waste. This tax hike will take away investment money to grow new plant and pay for new government regulations.
The direct consequence would be to slow economic growth which would impact employment. It would be our nations future when our sons and daughters cannot find jobs in the areas they were educated. Will it be one more reason for corporations to move their operations out of the country?
A revolution now and again is a good thing, don’t you think?
the Hunt For Red October.
Back the Tea Party! Rinos in the Republican party are not going to do it for us.
I remember Dick Army saying the say thing back in the 90’s I believe. “I can do more on the outside than I can do from within” What a load of shit, translation, I can make a shitload more money in the private section than working for the people of my state. Army is leaving Freedom works with @ 8 million?
The Speaker of the House serves entirely at the pleasure of a majority of the members of that chamber. An election for Speaker can thus be held at any time during a Congressional session, so long as a majority of the House support such a vote.
And this is different than all the people around here that jumped on Palin for doing the same thing?
Yet the Speaker is 3rd in line. Things that make you go - HHhmmm..
Boner needs to go... but Pelosi?
Get a grip.
On Rush’s show today he had DeMint and the retiring president of the Heritage Foundation on the phone. When Rush joked, “Now, Boehner didn’t force the two of you out, did he?” The two guests laughed and DeMint replied, “No, in fact it could go the other way.”
Rush didn’t follow up (and maybe he didn’t catch DeMint’s reply at all) but I found it VERY interesting.
Maybe instead you should rethink your branding of Palin as a quitter.
Go for it Jim
It is probably the intent of the Constitution that the Speaker should be a member of the House. After all, how can you speak for the House without being a member of it? There is also a strong historical precedent that indicates that the Speaker of the House must be a member of that body before he is elected. Never in US history has the House even attempted, so far as I know, to elect a Speaker who is not a member of the House. In fact, not only has the House never elected a non-Representative to be the Speaker of the House, none of the original 13 colonies legislatures, nor any of the 50 states, so far as I know, ever elected a speaker who was not also a member of the chamber who elected them; also the the Speaker of the British parliament's House of Commons, from whom our government in a large part derives is always a member of the House of Commons. There is absolutely no reason or precedent that suggests that the Speaker of the House can be someone who is not already a member of the House of Representatives.
However, that being said, it is true that the constitution does not explicitly say that the Speaker of the House must be a member of the House of Representatives at the time of his election, so I suppose according to the letter of the law the House could try to choose a non-member to be their Speaker if it wanted to. After all, it is the House who is given the sole power to "chuse (sic) its Speaker and other Officers." However, doing this would violate convention and parliamentary tradition.
We can all sleep well knowing that many of the idiots that ragged on Palin as a supposed ‘quitter’ and other things...
...were the very same people that promoted the non-border control of Perry as ‘conservative’, trashed Cain along with the MSM on a trumped up witch hunt and cheered Bachmann for hiring an uber RINO to run (tank) her campaign.
It’s so comforting to know that these same people are still at work torpedoing anyone who displays conservative tendencies and sticking to principle while calling liberal actions and politicians ‘true conservatives.
With their ‘help’ I’m sure we’ll get to the point of looking back fondly on the Romney run.
” Its my understanding that the Speaker doesnt HAVE to be a sitting Congressman.”
Yet the Speaker is 3rd in line. Things that make you go - HHhmmm..
With the Vice President as Senate ‘leader’, the states then had control of who succeeded the President, and after that the people, with the house.
DeMint’s in the Senate, Weepin Johnny is in the House.
So true!
Rush didn't follow up ON AIR.
Thanks. It's good to know what Jim said - it IS interesting.
IMO, It was a sarcastic remark meant for those that called her a quitter. He wasn’t.
Thank you very much for the very thorough explanation and bit of history! If either House ever has a job opening for a Parliamentarian, you should sign up and apply! Feel free to use me as a reference. :p
Our FR resident Parliamentarian, old republic, is a member of the class of ‘05 of which I am a proud member. He is approaching his seventh anniversary on FR!
I ditto your ‘feel free to use me as a reference’!
