Obama's official inauguration will be private

Because next year's inauguration falls on a Sunday, President Obama will hold only a small, private swearing-in ceremony on Jan. 20, and will hold a big public redo the next day.

The Inaugural Committee announced Thursday that activities will last three days: a day of service on Saturday, the small private ceremony on Sunday, and the public swearing-in, parade and balls on Monday.

The official part of the oath is given to Roberts himself. It’s important that the public know about it, but not necessary they see it. The assurance that he’s not lying is supposed to be not the publicity but the fact that it is taken on the Bible.

By the way, why the hell do we still have oaths? No one believes in them anymore. Read Hamlet or something else old and they’re swearing to something every other page. That was for a society of status and religion. We have neither, much.

Now we are a society of contract. You can take me to court to enforce promises, but mostly I can break my word when I feel like it. Unless I’m in court, because the law id pretentious, of getting married, because children are important and fighting over crappy collections of nicknacks is bothersome.
