News that a small Montana newspaper inserted the word allegedly in the midst of an AP news story -- so that it read Obama was allegedly born in Hawaii -- caused a small furor Tuesday. But how should we read this latest commentary on the presidents birthright? A) Proof that racism runs rampant in American society.
B) Evidence that "birthers" have infiltrated the ranks of the mainstream media.
C) An instance of precision from journalists, most of whom have been too willing to accept flimsy proof of President Obamas birthplace.
D) As a window into how bored journalists amuse themselves on deadline.
It would be more fun to vote for one of the more nefarious conclusions, but in fact America can be almost certain that the scribes at the Helena Independent Record dont really think Obama was reared on the Serengeti.
Im voting for D).
And that would be the explanation offered in an editors note Tuesday that a copy editor inserted the offending modifier into an otherwise accurate account from Associated Press, thinking the other copy editor would catch it, [but] he didnt. The note added: It was a poor attempt at humor and a poor decision, but was not intended to be printed in the paper.

Now that the “election” is over, I believe we’ll see more stories like this as newspapers start to dip their toes in the water — always, of course, with the disclaimer that they were “only kidding” or some such thing. They’re setting up a windsock.
I think Rainey is the alleged “journalist” with too much time on his hands....
In other news today ... President Obama was allegedly reelected after a contentious election battle with Mitt Romney amidst numerous claims of voter fraud ...
The LA Times allegedly employs journalists. Their editors allegedly justified locking up the Khalidi tape, in the name of alleged integrity. They alleged that the public’s right to know the truth was trumped by their alleged sacrosanct obligation to protect their sources.
One of our websites uses the forum software to automatically insert the word “Alleged” into any story that says “President Obama.” :-)
C being an option indicates progress is being made.
I believe Sheriff Joe.
The Commie, an alleged “American”... Allegedly was re-elected recently.....or so I hear tell....
Sadly we may be looking at the last President of the United States I for one Believe him to be the Greatest fraud perpetrated on this country ever
The word “allegedly” is not used very often in this style of article. However, the press almost wears out the phrase “so-called” when dealing with some conservatives or conservative topics. Turnabout is certainly fair play.
Certainly BHO was born somewhere. The problem is that I can’t really be sure of where that was. His entire life is a mirage, part truth, part fiction, part ego boost.
Like with Bill Clinton, the “truth” about Obama a lie yet undiscovered.
Obama was allegedly born or so the story goes.....he maybe one of the new robots.....
Shove it up your smelly Kenyan Obama, LAT.
You know d£mn good and well that virtually everything about your Obamadork is fake.
Especially BOTH of his photoshopped birth cents.
Who was the attending doctor?
BTTT
Wonder if we’ll have another whole 4 years and nobody will even know for sure whether or not Obama was an Indonesian citizen as a child. I’ve followed the birther question for years and there is still no clear answer on Indonesian citizenship. Maybe a citizen journalist will ask the Obama himself?
I guess that I am allegedly a birther as I question why alledegly Obama has spent $5,000,000+ alleged US dollars sealing his alleged college records and his alleged birth certificate. Until someone can say why he spent that kind of dough preventing someone looking at his records, I will be very suspicious. Label me an alleged birther as I vote “C”.
