India executes Terrorist convicted of 26/11 Massacre
Hindustan Times ^ | 21 Nov 2012 | HT Correspondent

Ajmal Kasab, the sole surviving terrorist from the 2008 Mumbai attacks, was hanged to death on Wednesday at Yerwada Jail in Pune. Kasab was executed at 7:30am at Yerwada jail in Pune in Maharashtra after President Pranab Mukherjee rejected his mercy plea earlier this month.

Pakistan had been informed about the hanging of Kasab, home minister Sushilkumar Shinde said on Wednesday.

He told reporters that President Pranab Mukherjee had rejected Kasab's mercy petition.

"Pakistan has been informed but there is no demand for Kasab's body. The president rejected Kasab's mercy petition Nov 5. I had further forwarded it to the Maharashtra government Nov 8," Shinde told mediapersons.

Maharashtra home minister RR Patil on Wednesday termed it as 'a tribute to people killed in the attacks and a message that India will not tolerate terrorism'.

"He was hanged at 7:30am this (Wednesday) morning," RR Patil told reporters at a press conference in Mumbai.

"The mercy petition of Kasab was rejected by the President, which we received on November 8 after which we have executed him," he said.

Patil added that this is a tribute to the 166 people and policemen who lost their lives in the terror attacks 4 years ago.

Kasab's end came just five days before the fourth anniversary of the brutal terror attacks. The Nov 26-29, 2008 terror siege had claimed 166 lives.

According to sources in the home department, Kasab said that he had no last wish before he was executed.

Kasab was reportedly moved to the Yerawada jail in a secret operation few days ago. His body will not be sent to Pakistan for burial as they had not accepted him as as their citizen, sources added. The Maharashtra home department is completing their paper work on the same and will be announcing his burial details.

Advocate Ujwal Nikam who was the public prosecutor in this case expressed happiness over the move." We have exposed the modus operandi of terror groups operating from Pakistan and sent a message that terrorism will not be tolerated, " Nikam said.

"Yes, Kasab has been hanged this (Wednesday) morning at 7.30 a.m. in Yerawada Central Jail," special public prosecutor Ujjwal Nikam, who led the 26/11 terror attacks case, said.

President Pranab Mukherjee on November 8 rejected the mercy petition filed by Kasab, sentenced to death for the 26/11 Mumbai terror attacks.

Kasab's mercy petition to President Pranab Mukherjee was the terrorist's last hope.

The move is a strong political message sent by the government before the start of Parliament session and ahead of the Gujarat elections.

The decision came two months after the home ministry rejected Kasab's mercy petition addressed to the President.

Venu Rajamony, press secretary of the President confirmed the decision.

Home minister Sushilkumar Shinde's recommendation to the President was in line with the recommendation of Maharashtra governor K Sankaranarayan and the no-mercy-for-terrorists principle laid down by his predecessor P Chidambaram.

Ajmal Kasab and nine fellow Lashkar-e-Taiba terrorists had sailed into Mumbai on November 26, 2008 from Karachi and gone on a shooting spree that killed 166 people. Kasab was the only one captured alive by security forces.

Kasab was sentenced to death in May 2010 after he was found guilty of a string of charges, including waging war against India, murder and terrorist acts.

He appealed in the Supreme Court claiming he did not receive a fair trial but his petition was struck down in August.

During the 2008 attacks, the heavily armed terrorists stormed targets in Mumbai including luxury hotels, a Jewish centre, a hospital and a bustling train station.

India blames the Pakistan-based Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) militant organisation for training, equipping and financing the gunmen with support from "elements" in the Pakistan military.

They do, but it is used extremely rarely. The standard for its use is that the crime has to be of an extreme and unusual nature.

He should have committed the crime in Norway, he would have been sentenced to 5 years in a Five-Star luxury hotel.

He was hanged. Please notice that, we need the same means of execution here plus faster way to get them to the scaffold. For those involved in multiple rapes, murder and child molestation. Serious drug dealing too such as meth and heroin

Hanged was for the worst in England. Hanging is still the means of execution in Jamaica. We need to bring it back. Public flogging for drug dealers.

A wood chipper and a pig farm ought to figure into same (in order to show due respect to his religion).

Absolutely. I agree. Our so-called executions are a joke.

Hangings are proper justice Public hangings all the better!

Well India’s only method of execution is hanging. They don’t use injections/chairs/firing squads .... yet.

I saw footage of the interrogation of this guy, and transcripts of the cellphone conversations they had with their commander while the attack was going on (not sure how India got that); it was eerie. They were walking through this building, and the attackers were amazed at how big the windows were; they must have come from some dirt-poor villages. It was actually distracting them from their mission.

Not too sure, but I think US gave that intel abt the conversations.. The US had given some info to the Indians on the incident but I'm not really certain if that included the conversations as well

Those conversations were caught because the Intelligence Bureau (IB) which is India’s domestic intelligence agency (RAW is the counterpart of the CIA)tapped the cell phones of the attackers. It is said that they fed the SIM cards to the Lashkar-e-taiba through a courier. However that might just be a smokescreen because they are known to have an extensive domestic tapping capability which they don’t necessarily want to reveal.

what was interesting was that the most people killed were Moslems. The Pakistani terrorists attacked 2 5-star hotels, but most people managed to get out, they slaughtered a Jewish family (who were peaceful) - 6 people, but then they went to Victoria Station and killed the poor people there randomly and at that time most were poor Moslem workers heading home...

Obama would have given him a burial in accordance with muslim tradition.

I knew that they did, but that it was cumbersome to enforce. I am surprised that they took as little time to do it as they did...

Ilyas Kashmiri ate a drone missile. Ajmal Kasab graced the noose. Next in line is Afzal Guru waiting for his turn.

And US needs to had over David Headley and Tahwwur Hussein Rana to India rather then protecting them and feeding them in a 5 star luxury prison in Chicago.

Injections are a silly invention of ours, I think.

With all the hollering about "cruel and unusual punishment" for any possible execution method, I've always wondered about something.

Why not a massive overdose of heroin? The guys dies, but he dies really happy, so it's tough to claim it's cruel.

Have to admit it would be a bit unusual.

A productive use for all those drugs we confiscate each year.

Hanging, when done in the British style, as it is in India, is probably the most humane form of execution in existance. When done properly, they are dead within 20 seconds of being removed from the condemned cell.

What is illustrative here is that it took 4 years for the Indians to put this person to death.

Here in America, it would take 20 years, if at all. Considering that the perp is a muslim, and considering the administration, he would have probably been jailed and traded off for another prisoner, at some point.

At least the Indians still understand the concept of “justice”.

Here, it will soon be forgotten (if it hasn’t already been)...

well then, why was this scumbag given that?

he went and killed innocents, laughing as he shot them and then cried like a baby when caught

He should have been flayed alive and worse...

Kasab was merely a puppet whose life ended on the string......as the Times of India so aptly put it. The real puppeteers who ran the show are still in Pakistan enjoying American aid money.

Now if country X had perpetrated terrorist attacks in the U.S. while receiving arms and financial aid from country Y, what would have the US done to both X and Y?
