~The FReeper Canteen Presents~

Road Trip: Ellsworth Air Force Base, South Dakota

Ellsworth Air Force Base is a United States Air Force base near Rapid City in Meade County and Pennington County, South Dakota, United States. It is home to the 28th Bomb Wing of the Air Combat Command (ACC), operating the B-1B Lancer.

As host wing, the 28th Bomb Wing includes an operations group, a maintenance group, a mission support group, and a medical group. The base controls all air space 40 miles (64 km) around its area, including all landings at nearby Rapid City Regional Airport, Rapid City, South Dakota.

The mission of the 28th Bomb Wing is to put bombs on target. Every Airman in this Wing, whether its maintaining its people, equipment, pulling a trigger or aiming crosshairs, puts bombs on target.

Ellsworth Air Force Base is home to the 28th Bomb Wing, which flies B-1B Lancers and serves as the host unit, providing all essential base operating support services for Ellsworth and combat support services for an Air Expeditionary Wing.

The wing consists of four groups: the 28th Operations Group, 28th Mission Support Group, 28th Maintenance Group and 28th Medical Group.

Air Combat Command is the primary force provider of combat airpower to America's warfighting commands. To support global implementation of national security strategy, ACC operates fighter, bomber, reconnaissance, battle-management and electronic-combat aircraft. It also provides command, control, communications and intelligence systems, and conducts global information operations.

As a force provider, ACC organizes, trains, equips and maintains combat-ready forces for rapid deployment and employment while ensuring strategic air defense forces are ready to meet the challenges of peacetime air sovereignty and wartime air defense.

ACC numbered air forces provide the air component to U.S. Central and Southern Commands with Headquarters ACC serving as the air component to U.S. Northern and Joint Forces Commands. ACC also augments forces to U.S. European, Pacific and Strategic Commands.

True story. Some 26 years ago, the Mrs. and I visted Mt. Rushmore (the major attraction closest to Ellsworth AFB) with our four month old baby daughter in tow. It was New Year's Day 1986. It was 56 degrees and I did wear shorts just for fun and a photo op.

First of all, you need a medal for going to a major attraction with a four-month old in tow.

Second, where's this photo op picture? Got to post pictures around here. LOL

26 y.o. Liam Tasker was killed in battle. His dog Theo who served alongside him died of a seizure and broken heart hours later. (British Soldier)

The smell of the brine is permeating the entire house. I started it just after noon and am letting it cool. Will pour it into the cooler later.

The B 29 looks so huge in pictures and in the 40’s it was. Along side the 52’s it looks so small

I came down from North Dakota to visit my Daughter ans Son for Thanksgiving. My Daughter lives in Box Elder and the B1s are practicing touch and go’s. Years ago when the BUFFs were here it was so tremendous. To watch and hear their touch and go’s. I’m still amazed that something so big could fly so slow just above our heads

If it has survived all our moves, it is probably packed deep in the bowels of some box somewhere. Winter is actually a fairly good time to visit Rushmore. The normal tourist crowd won’t go anywhere near the Dakotas at that time.
