~The FReeper Canteen Presents~

Road Trip: Ellsworth Air Force Base, South Dakota

Ellsworth Air Force Base is a United States Air Force base near Rapid City in Meade County and Pennington County, South Dakota, United States. It is home to the 28th Bomb Wing of the Air Combat Command (ACC), operating the B-1B Lancer.

As host wing, the 28th Bomb Wing includes an operations group, a maintenance group, a mission support group, and a medical group. The base controls all air space 40 miles (64 km) around its area, including all landings at nearby Rapid City Regional Airport, Rapid City, South Dakota.

The mission of the 28th Bomb Wing is to put bombs on target. Every Airman in this Wing, whether its maintaining its people, equipment, pulling a trigger or aiming crosshairs, puts bombs on target.

Ellsworth Air Force Base is home to the 28th Bomb Wing, which flies B-1B Lancers and serves as the host unit, providing all essential base operating support services for Ellsworth and combat support services for an Air Expeditionary Wing.

The wing consists of four groups: the 28th Operations Group, 28th Mission Support Group, 28th Maintenance Group and 28th Medical Group.

Air Combat Command is the primary force provider of combat airpower to America's warfighting commands. To support global implementation of national security strategy, ACC operates fighter, bomber, reconnaissance, battle-management and electronic-combat aircraft. It also provides command, control, communications and intelligence systems, and conducts global information operations.

As a force provider, ACC organizes, trains, equips and maintains combat-ready forces for rapid deployment and employment while ensuring strategic air defense forces are ready to meet the challenges of peacetime air sovereignty and wartime air defense.

ACC numbered air forces provide the air component to U.S. Central and Southern Commands with Headquarters ACC serving as the air component to U.S. Northern and Joint Forces Commands. ACC also augments forces to U.S. European, Pacific and Strategic Commands.

Good evening, dduck....love those planes!!

I was there during the transition from B-52s to the B-1 before I retained into F-15, and later to Intel. Right know I enjoy seeing the F-35s, CV-22s and F-22s in the Florida Panhandle.

A little colder than Florida?

Just a little colder, Snowbird weather.

How are you today?

Did you have some sun?

I am off for an appointment. Back in a bit.

I didn’t mean to mislead anyone. My only service was as a daughter,granddaughter, great-grandaughter, wife and mother (ad infinitem) of all the men in my family who actually did serve. I spent many years waiting on news from afar and worry about those I loved......some who gave all. Dating way back to the Remolutionary War.

Thank you so much for your wonderful Canteen threads. I always read them. It is a great service and honor that you do.

Awe, but our families serve as well. No misleading. We thank you for that, that job of waiting at home....not an easy job.

Tonight, just a few miles south of Elmendorf, it is 4F....I just got home from work and I’m trying to get warm.

Welcome to the Canteen, Jabba...thanks for sharing your experience.

What a thrill, and probably shock, to have a B-1 fly so low over your car.

BAND OF BROTHERS

WORLD WAR II

Members of the 101st Airborne, June 7, 1944 at Ste.Marie du Mont, France

"This day is call'd the feast of Crispian.
He that outlives this day, and comes safe home,
Will stand a tip-toe when this day is named,
And rouse him at the name of Crispian.
He that shall live this day, and see old age,
Will yearly on the vigil feast his neighbours,
And say, "To-morrow is Saint Crispian."
Then will he strip his sleeve and show his scars,
And say, "These wounds I had on Crispin's day."

KOREA

Members of the "Chosin Few", 1st Marine Division, December 1950

"Old men forget; yet all shall be forgot,
But he'll remember with advantages
What feats he did that day. Then shall our names,
Familiar in his mouth as household words,
Harry the King, Bedford, and Exeter,
Warwick and Talbot, Salisbury and Gloucester,
Be in their flowing cups freshly rememb'red.
This story shall the good man teach his son;
And Crispin Crispian shall ne'er go by,
From this day to the ending of the world,
But we in it shall be remembered."

VIETNAM

FMF Corpsman D. R. Howe treats the wounds of Pfc. D. A. Crum, "H" Company, 2nd Battalion, Fifth Marine Regiment, during Operation Hue City.

"We few, we happy few, we band of brothers;
For he to-day that sheds his blood with me
Shall be my brother; be he ne'er so vile,
This day shall gentle his condition:
And gentlemen in England now a-bed
Shall think themselves accursed they were not here,
And hold their manhoods cheap whiles any speaks
That fought with us upon Saint Crispin's day."

AFGHANISTAN

Soldiers of the 101st Airborne Division in action, Afghanistan, 2011

"Once more unto the breach, dear friends, once more,
Or close the wall up with our English dead.
In peace there's nothing so becomes a man
As modest stillness and humility;
But when the blast of war blows in our ears,
Then imitate the action of the tiger;
Stiffen the sinews, summon up the blood,
Disguise fair nature with hard-favour'd rage;
Then lend the eye a terrible aspect;
Let it pry through the portage of the head
Like the brass cannon; let the brow o'erwhelm it
As fearfully as does a galled rock
O'erhang and jutty his confounded base,
Swill'd with the wild and wasteful ocean."

(Henry V, Act IV, Scene iii)

THE STRUGGLE AGAINST TYRANNY GOES ON,
AS IT HAS FROM TIMES IMMEMORIAL.
THE BAND OF BROTHERS STILL STANDS FAST IN THE BREACH!

They have our six!

Honor them for their Service and Sacrifice!
