Republican Brothel Owner Who Employs 80 Prostitutes Wins Election as County Commissioner in Nevada
Daily Mail (U.K.) ^ | 19 November 2012 | Daily Mail (U.K.)

Brothel owner who employs 80 prostitutes wins election as county commissioner in Nevada... and he's a Republican

Lance Gilman is a thriving businessman with dozens of employees. That those workers include a good many prostitutes didn't faze the people of a rural Nevada county who recently elected him as a Storey County commissioner by a wide margin.

The Mustang Ranch brothel owner is the first such owner to win election to public office in Nevada since prostitution was legalized here in 1971, Nevada historian Guy Rocha said. And he's believed to be the first to do so in the state's 148-year history.

'He's in rare company,' Rocha said. 'Of course, it's going to be rare because the business of selling sex for money is illegal in every jurisdiction in the United States except in rural Nevada.'

Some two dozen brothels legally operate in 10 of Nevada's 17 counties. Prostitution is illegal in the counties that include Las Vegas and Reno, the state's population centers.

Gilman, 68, a self-described 'dye-in-the-wool Republican who loves American values,' said he encountered few objections to his Mustang Ranch ownership during his campaign in the county of 4,000. He won with 62 percent of the vote on November 6.

He is a married father of four with nine grandchildren. All but one of his children, including one of his daughters, work in the family business.

His claims that his bordello, located along Interstate 80 some 10 miles east of Reno, has contributed more than $5 million to the county's budget over the past decade. It has 44 full-time employees, and 30 to 80 working girls, depending on the season.

To 99 percent of the voters, they view it as just a business,' Gilman told The Associated Press. 'It's a prosperous business that's helped the county.'

Be glad the money his company makes is freely given, unlike so many who have made their careers in politics.

It’s a legal business in Nevada and he is a businessman.

I don’t have a problem with it.

If prostitution were legal in other places many crimes committed by prostitutes and their pimps would dissappear along with girls who are forced to work to supply their drug habits.

One thing is sure you are not going to stop sex.Why not have it’s workers pay income tax, and have health exams.

I know a lot of people disagree, but today there are a lot of worse things than prostitutes.Gay bars and Bath houses for instance.

... bet he didn’t have a family-values platform...

Of course not...he won. Imagine that...someone running a brothel wins election in town where brothels are legal. I know it can be hard sometimes to understand that some people really don't like big government telling them what to do.

I'm with you.

I don't approve of it morally, but legalizing it sure does improve the lives of the women and girls that work in it.

If you don't approve of it...don't go to a bordello. And in fact...preach to those who do. But don't turn a business idea over to criminals (ala prohibition)...nothing good ever comes from that.

Actually most of these ladies working in brothels are not Democrats - when they do profess to any political leaning, it is usually Libertarian.

Democrats give it away for free, if they think they can succeed in corrupting some official with blackmail later.

Consider David Petraeus and his connection to Paula Broadwell, whom I suspect IS a crypto-Democrat.

So tell me, which is better.

Running a brothel, and taking money that people freely spend after working hard for it, or running a country, and forcing people to give you money they worked hard for, with the threat of large fines and jail time?

And the brothel the Federal government took over - was this same Mustang Ranch.

Seems like the previous owner had a few problems with proper reporting of his cash flow for income tax purposes, and had to flee to Brazil.

Once a few years ago, while the Ranch was closed, I went out there just to get a closer look. A rather large bungalow-style structure, with a pretty formidible-looking chain link fence around the exterior of the grounds.

Ye Gods, man...we can't have consenting adults getting away with purely consensual acts amongst themselves! How will some people fill that hole in their lives if the boot of big, intrusive government isn't holding the necks of others to the ground? American Idol and celebrity gossip only go so far. Think of the children!!!

I visited a bordello once down in Mexico, didn’t partake, but was about $80 away from whirlwind tour of STD’s. The girls were 20 but looked 40, rough life.

I don’t condone it, but it does slow down the street hookers impact on a communiity.

Pick yer poison!

But it is not the domain of government to legislate base morality.
