The point of the story is the layoffs. Yet, I can’t help but wonder why the steel worker’s union represents clerks.

Public and private unions should be kept separate. Some of our prison guards in Michigan are UAW.

For the same reason the AFL-CIO wants nurses. Adding to the directors salaries is the top priority.

Because there really aren’t that many actual steel workers in the USA any more? Gotta get dues payers somewhere!

Kaiser Hospital is the remnant of the in-house health system of Kaiser Steel company. The steel union killed off Kaiser Steel in the 1970’s but he health system survived because they started accepting non-Kaiser employee groups as customers.

I see S.E.I.U. signs all over the Kaiser facilities I use. The Steel Workers are part of a coalition of unions at Kaiser. I can’t imagine the Steel Workers have a large part. Probably something left after WWII when Kaiser was a major ship building and industrial firm and the medical side was small.
