Today was a close call for Edson Barrera Gonzalez. The 20-year-old Happy Valley man ended up just miles from the Mexico border when a Clackamas County Circuit judge signed an order that aids in his bid to stay in the country.
Gonzalez has been held in an U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement center in Tacoma, Wash., for a year. Tuesday night, he contacted his parents and immigration advocates working on his behalf to say he was told to pack up.
On Wednesday morning, the Dallas-based Isenberg Center for Immigration Empowerment frantically began trying to figure out where he was and how to keep him in the country.
Gonzalez, then a 19-year-old employee at Macy's department store, was arrested last year for giving unauthorized discounts and ringing up false returns to benefit his parents, whom, he said, were struggling financially.

Illegals - just doing the crimes that Americans don’t want to commit . . .
Was he going to be killed back in Mexico? People act like he’s being returned to the gulag in Siberia. He could just go back to Mexico and get in the immigration line like everyone else.
We are no longer a nation of laws.
Everybody’s got a sob story.
So the guy was caught being a thief at work, and a judge rewards him from being deported.
I think it’s time to seriously clear all the boards. Local, state and federal.
Wow, he can go and be free in his own country!
WIll this judge decline to prosecute him for theft too?
Judge shopping should be illegal.
Something else the same people who say that— if ever they committed serious crime here, returning to Mexico to evade being arrested in America is certainly not a problem
Name one country in the world that is not laughing at us.
I heard that Mexico has very low unemployment, there are many open jobs to be had. Which essentially says those who come here don’t have the necessary skills to fill even the entry level jobs in Mexico. Do you suppose there is any truth to that, and that the Mexican el presidente is casting off the unemployables and criminals on the US?
How is he working at Macy’s? I am wondering what SSN he used?
Maybe Barry loaned him one of his 20+ SSNs.
Can’t have too many thieves in the country. What’s one more? Obviously qualified to run for office. I saw earlier that law schools want to get illegals licensed, so why not let them run for office?
I have a headache!
Hope this sheds some light on why we are a 3rd world country..Paulette Faulkner, an employee of Montgomery Countys Office of Child Support Enforcement, sent an email to Governor OMalley in 2009, describing routine cases of illegals attempting to collect welfare benefits. She received a stern warning from then Department of Human Resources Deputy Secretary Stacy Rodgers not to complain.
Rodgers, who shares a seat with Torres on the Council for New Americans, told Faulkner to accept CASA de Maryland ID cards as legitimate identification. Faulkner refused, knowing that to follow that order would break the law. A short time later she was fired. She found no support from any legislator and was refused unemployment compensation. In the meantime, an audit revealed some 52,000 welfare recipients using invalid or non-existent social security numbers. A 2011 audit found similar problems.
Last year, Delegate Tony ODonnell (R-Dist. 29C) proposed HB-28, Public Benefits Requirement of Proof of Lawful Presence which would have addressed the problems identified both by Faulkner and the two audits. The bill reasonably required welfare recipients to prove their eligibility with a valid ID. Help Save Maryland President Brad Botwin and Howard County resident Tom Young both went to Annapolis to testify on the bills behalf, each taking significant time off from work to attend the hearing.
Protocol demands that those in favor of the proposed law testify first. In what was characterized as a deliberate slight, the committee chairman, Del. Norman Conway (D-Dist. 38B), instead called a long list of bill opponents, including CASA de Maryland, the ACLU and others. They testified for over an hour, whereupon Del. Conway abruptly ended the hearing and ran from the room, shutting out any possibility of allowing proponents to speak.

It’s on a lot of levels. I live in Washington state where they make it really easy to get a driver’s license.....if you are an illegal. If you are an American you have to come up with multiple forms of ID and proof of a residence in the state. Recently ICE noticed a couple “customers” using the same address and they ran that address with the state DMV. 600 people had used the same two addresses on the same rural road.
