Why Mitt Romney Deserved To Lose The Election
Forbes ^ | 11/15/2012

Posted on 11/15/2012 6:53:41 AM PST by SeekAndFind

In an article published in 2001, Jude Wanniski, the author of The Way the World Works, noted that since 1896, only Republican presidential candidates running on “pro-growth” platforms have won. Republicans advocating “austerity” have invariably lost. With the defeat of Mitt Romney, the election of 2012 continued this pattern, with one addition. Republican presidential candidates offering clueless confusion also lose.

Democracies tend to evolve two political parties, a party of economic growth and a party of income redistribution. If a credible plan for economic growth is offered, the people will vote for it, provided that it does not involve crushing the poorest and weakest members of society. If not, they will vote for income redistribution, in an effort to assure that everyone survives so that they can enjoy the fruits of economic growth, if and when political leaders emerge who understand how to produce it.

If the American electorate decides that income redistribution is the best that is available during an election season, they will vote Democrat. The Democrats long ago nailed down the redistribution (a.k.a., “fairness”) position. This leaves the Republicans the choice between being pro-growth (while also being non-threatening), or losing. In 2012, Mitt Romney and many, many other Republican candidates collapsed into clueless confusion and lost.

Mitt Romney became the Republican nominee because Herman Cain, the only true pro-growth candidate in the primary race that was actually competent to do the job of president, self-destructed over personal issues. However, once Romney had sewed up the nomination, supply-siders started projecting their hopes onto him, and ignoring what he was actually saying and doing.

Really? I guess you have never read the Old Testament and observed how many archaic rules we have decided were downright unreasonable.

And that sentence makes you sound ignorant about Christianity.
Know you not that the very early church laid only a few strictures on the new gentile believers; the story is in Acts 15 and they published this letter to the new churches:

The apostles and the elders, to the Gentile brothers and sisters in Antioch, Syria, and Cilicia. Greetings!
We’ve heard that some of our number have disturbed you with unsettling words we didn’t authorize. We reached a united decision to select some delegates and send them to you along with our dear friends Barnabas and Paul. These people have devoted their lives to the name of our Lord Jesus Christ. Therefore, we are sending Judas and Silas. They will confirm what we have written.
The Holy Spirit has led us to the decision that no burden should be placed on you other than these essentials: refuse food offered to idols, blood, the meat from strangled animals, and sexual immorality. You will do well to avoid such things. Farewell.

Oh, great. There goes the entire GOP-e electoral strategy for the past two decades, sailing right out the window. ;)

great, you helped destroy this country. go away.

That's funny, I made no mention of who I voted for.

I am a believer in God and Jesus the Son of God, too.

Then tell me: have you been showing love to fellow Christians? Your above response sure did not seem loving, but then I admit that my own perceptions are not always correct. Let us turn to God's own word then:

1 John 4:20-21
If anyone says, I love God, and hates a brother or sister, he is a liar, because the person who doesn’t love a brother or sister who can be seen can’t love God, who can’t be seen. This commandment we have from him: Those who claim to love God ought to love their brother and sister also.
I think we would all be better off if those claiming to be Christians loved God, because if we did then we would be loving our fellow Christians, too. As the above says, it is impossible to love God and not love your fellow Christians.

Anyone can cherry pick weak places to criticize. Mitt needed to put more energy into his strong places. Sure, Barack could have said “believe in America” too, but it was clear to anyone who bothered to listen for a while that the kind of America that ought to be believed in differed between the two.

You're the ignorant one. Are you really trying to equate/compare mormonism with the Old Testament. Seriously?

If you are not a left wing troll trying to make Conservatives appear ignorant, then what is your real goal?

Ah, the traditional tactic for a freeper who can't reason logically, viz. call someone a left wing troll. Typical.

My goal is to inform the RNC that conservatives are tired of compromising our values merely to vote for whatever big government liberal they put forth as a candidate. The fact that we stayed home in droves ought to be a wake up call to the RNC that unless they start putting forward genuine conservatives, we're not voting.

It’s a question of stewardship of your civic prerogatives, and sincere Christians have sincere disagreements.

Agreed; though much of that would disappear if we really loved each other (see 1 John & James) -- the funny thing is that a lot of those disagreements disappear when you're focusing on the work of the Church.

If you did the wrong thing for the right reason, God will more easily forgive than if you did the right thing for the wrong reason.

God does weigh the hearts; there also is the example of Rahab the Harlot in the "Hall of Faith" in Hebrews, who lied to those seeking the Israelite spies.

What most refuse to acknowledge is that it was unlikely that ANYBODY could have beaten the voter fraud planned and perpetrated by the Obama machine. They seem to prefer pointing fingers, blaming Romney and blathering on about Patraeus' sex life.

There really is no “do not lie” commandment per se. The scripture says “do not bear false witness.” When you are in a respected forum that expects truth, you tell it the truth to the best of your knowledge. You don’t tell it something that you know is wrong. The New Testament calls for Christians to deal in truth (a literal translation would be “truthing”) with one another.

It is not forbidden in any express scripture to mislead those who are evil with the purpose of thwarting the evil. So Rahab’s game really isn’t a case of what I mentioned.

Excellent point; one not many people seem to grasp.

When you are in a respected forum that expects truth, you tell it the truth to the best of your knowledge. You don’t tell it something that you know is wrong.

Absolutely agreed -- too bad so few actually seem to apply it (the term "testilie" WRT LEOs shows the opposite is expected in some cases).

The New Testament calls for Christians to deal in truth (a literal translation would be “truthing”) with one another.

It is not forbidden in any express scripture to mislead those who are evil with the purpose of thwarting the evil. So Rahab’s game really isn’t a case of what I mentioned.

"Truthing" is a nifty term, I'll have to remember it.
Good insights, quite a pleasure conversing on the subject w/ you.

Total BS article. The average voter wouldn’t have a clue about the issues Forbes claims is so important. The average voter does, however, totally understand “free stuff”. And it would appear that’s about all they DO understand. I suppose such understanding is a consequence of generations of entitlement rolls and government school propaganda.

And the “testilying” does abuse the forum, falling well into the “false witness” category. God has expectations even out of secular Caesar for carrying on the functions of earthly justice. When Caesar refuses, God becomes angry.

Well they already are screaming about voter verification laws, while their very looie liberal friends at the UN itself are expressing wonderment about the viability of any election system that lacks them. “Get the IDs to the people who lack them, already, and quit whining.”

I think the GOP should boldly keep pressing for such voter verification laws, citing even the U.N.! At least if our Dem pals pack the polls, they will only be able to pack one poll with a given voter.

No, Einstein. It’s comparing that both Mormons and the Bible had rules that have been abandoned by modern humans.

Your perfect candidate ain’t ever going to be on the ballot in modern times.

We're not going to vote for a Mormon, or anybody else that belongs to a cult. We're also not going to vote for any more liberals. We had enough of that with Bush. This isn't rocket science.

I thought the article was very, very insightful. As for your gratuitous comments about Mormons and cults, they remain gratuitous and bigoted. Some, like you, may remain bigoted. That is your prerogative. Others, such as the Forbes author, are looking at fundamental issues that shaped, or in this case, misshaped the entire Romney campaign. The lessons here are fundamental to all future national campaigns and elections. In the meantime, these insights can inform conservative policies and conservative messaging.

I say get to know some real Mormons in your area (we don't bite, we aren't zombies, many of us are very educated, we do think for ourselves, and we testify that Christ is the living Son of the living God) Most of all, it is high time for all of us to learn the kind of political lessons espoused in this article.

Besides, the issue is NOT "who you are NOT going to vote for," the issue is how can conservatives build a strong legislative foundation and craft policy messages that will resonate with the majority of groups, including single women, minorities and immigrants, that will sweep away the perverse illogic of redistribution and socialist liberals.

Finally, there are better ways of building strong coalitions of like-minded patriots than labeling natural allies with slanderous names. Of course, you and your allies can flame on, but that isn't going to win elections or improve the destiny of the United States of America.
