Why Hispanics Don’t Vote for Republicans

It is not immigration policy that creates the strong bond between Hispanics and the Democratic party, but the core Democratic principles of a more generous safety net, strong government intervention in the economy, and progressive taxation.

A March 2011 poll by Moore Information found that Republican economic policies were a stronger turn-off for Hispanic voters in California than Republican positions on illegal immigration.

And a strong reason for that support for big government is that so many Hispanics use government programs. U.S.-born Hispanic households in California use welfare programs at twice the rate of native-born non-Hispanic households. And that is because nearly one-quarter of all Hispanics are poor in California, compared to a little over one-tenth of non-Hispanics. Nearly seven in ten poor children in the state are Hispanic, and one in three Hispanic children is poor, compared to less than one in six non-Hispanic children.

The best evidence available on Hispanic public opinion, a big election even poll from Latino Decisions and ImpreMedia, makes it clear that this is just a fairly liberal voting bloc. Just 12 percent of Latinos support a cuts-only approach to deficit reduction, and only 25 percent want to repeal Obamacare.

seems to contrast the latest media meme that it’s ALL about immigration policy.

"Compromise" suggests BOTH sides get something. What if amnesty/"path to citizenship" meant you become a citizen, but cannot vote(as Rush suggested) for 5 years or more?(I would add not get any welfare)

Great info that needs to be posted far and wide on FR and elsewhere.

Another enlightening stat that Rush talked about on Friday is that, before Ronald Reagan signed blanket amnesty legislation, Hispanics identified as 37% Republican. After Reagan signed the amnesty bill, giving citizenship to 3 Million illegals, the percentage of Hispanics identifying as Republicans dropped significantly to 30%.
