Romney spread around some careless words about wanting Romneycare, a purely state plan, to be a “national model” (whatever that might mean, and I think it just means that he wanted other states to consider imitating it) — but I don’t think Romney’s implementation was the true inspiration of Obamacare. The idea of nationalized health care is not new, it got floated as long as 50 years ago.
