On a conference call with House Republicans a day after the party’s electoral battering last week, Speaker John A. Boehner dished out some bitter medicine, and for the first time in the 112th Congress, most members took their dose.
Their party lost, badly, Mr. Boehner said, and while Republicans would still control the House and would continue to staunchly oppose tax rate increases as Congress grapples with the impending fiscal battle, they had to avoid the nasty showdowns that marked so much of the last two years.
Members on the call, subdued and dark, murmured words of support — even a few who had been a thorn in the speaker’s side for much of this Congress.
It was a striking contrast to a similar call last year, when Mr. Boehner tried to persuade members to compromise with Democrats on a deal to extend a temporary cut in payroll taxes, only to have them loudly revolt.
With President Obama re-elected and Democrats cementing control of the Senate, Mr. Boehner will need to capitalize on the chastened faction of the House G.O.P. that wants to cut a deal to avert sudden tax increases and across-the-board spending cuts in January that could send the economy back into recession. After spending two years marooned between the will of his loud and fractious members and the Democratic Senate majority, the speaker is trying to assert control, and many members seem to be offering support.

NY Times article aside, few wins by Conservatives does not negate the fact that the GOP establishment is controlling the agenda and it’s not an agenda shared by most Conservatives.

Euro socialism is not my ideal, but we are headed for hell, not Euro socialism. Euro socialism for the most part actually believes in a strong education system. Muslim areas aside, Europeans violent crime rates are nothing compared to ours. Their bureaucracies are actually run by pretty smart people. And, they still do produce things. Remember French socialism has 85% of their electric power produced by domestically constructed and operated nuclear (Areva anyone).
Based upon life expectancies in Europe, health care is actually pretty good. You don't bankrupt yourself seeing a dentist.
I am not defending socialism and prefer the America of my grandfather. But don't let anyone think we are headed for anything like what the Europeans have. The folks in charge here are just not that good.

Sorry the conclusions from those facts don’t fit your NYTimes’ narrative- which is that conservative House members are evil troublemakers.
I would need to see a transcript of the phone call in order to believe it.
I keep hearing from everyone where I work that the tea party is totally discredited. I try to tell them that I don't think that is the case and the problem is that a lot of the house GOP members were put their by the tea party, not the RNC.

Don’t ya just love the Times’ leaving out the fact that Obama sandbagged the bargaining with a bunch of 11th hour demands? Goofs.
As for Boehner...there’s no doubt the GOP got drubbed on election day this time. But I also don’t think Obama’s mandate is as large as some think. Romney was pretty close in the popular vote, and Obamacare is still very unpopular. I’m not saying there isn’t a lot of work to be done, because there is. And the House GOP is probably going to have to take a bite of a metaphorical sandwich known for having a rather unpleasant filling a time or two in the next couple of years. But I don’t think it’s white flag time, or anywhere near it.
Just MHO, of course.
There aren’t enough conservatives to run roughshod over the rest of the R caucus though (yet).
So I don’t expect any really big victories for us.

The fear of being primaried is very real in RINOs in conservative, and even ‘moderate’ districts. The Party doesn’t help them in primaries and if they tap their contributors heavily in the primary they risk not having funds to beat off the Dems- who will attack even harder. So it’s best to compromise with conservatives (and raise more money).
This NYTimes article is just scripting for the Sunday news shows to bash the increased House conservative bloc as childish obstructionists, instead of representatives of the will of the people. I hate our stupid media.
How can the fact that they won the House by a large margin translate into "their party lost, badly".
No matter who control congress/white house, this nation keeps heading in the same direction....socialism.
The border has remained wide open for decades...why?
Billions sent to foreign countries for energy needs...why?
Government has grown to an out of control behemoth...why?
Freedom and liberties slowly disappearing...why?
Monumental fiscal mismanagement...why?
I thought the republican party was for smaller government, lower taxes, pro business/lower federal regulation.
I submit to you all, they are not. Sure, they throw us a bone every now and again, but we've been heading toward a big government social state regardless party control.
If we keep fishing from the same ol pond, were gonna keep catching the same ol big mouth bass.
WE WILL NOT CHANGE THE REPUBLICAN PARTY! Too much power, backroom deals, money and corruption within it's core.

What worries me is Boehner’s jibberish talk about “tax reform”. That is just cover to snow the GOP base because Barry only cares about tax rate revenue increases. He won’t agree to anything else right now.
With the marxists in control of the DPUSA it seems Boehner wants to move to the left and be the red dog GOP. Fail. Nobody likes a loser and the Dem brand is winning right now. People will vote for the winner.
boehner sold us out long ago. It is apparent those in the congress and senate have their lifetime perks, bennies, lucrative pensions and health care. In other words, “We The Conservative Patriotic People,” “Do Not Mean Nothing!”
There are those of us who have been advocating a split from the beginning.
We were told to ‘vote for the R’ and called traitors if we did not. Nice to see people coming around.
