White House says Christie's people easier to deal with than Cuomo's people

It’s true love between the Democratic president and the Republican governor of New Jersey.

More than a week after President Obama and New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie toured sections of the Jersey Shore ravaged by Superstorm Sandy, the White House remains “stunned” at how helpful Christie and his team have been and how easy it is to work with them...

“The Christie people are so much easier to deal with than the Cuomo people,” a senior administration official said, referring to Gov. Cuomo. “New York wants to do everything alone, but we’re working with Christie really well. It’s weird.”

Obama has ordered every Cabinet member — except Secretary of State Hillary Clinton — “to go up there [to New Jersey] at least once for Christie,” the source said.

OK, thanks -- I'll check that out later.

There's something to keep in mind down there along the Jersey Shore, and it hasn't been on the radar screen for too many people but will eventually hit home hard when things settle down and a rebuilding effort begins. I'm pretty sure that FEMA disaster relief and post-disaster recovery funds are not going to be available for any recovery/rebuilding work involving vacation homes -- and that applies to an awful lot of real estate down there.

Personally, I think this was one of the primary reasons why Chris Christie was so adamant about getting the president up here quickly ... because there's no mechanism in place to address these particular catastrophic financial losses under current funding rules. Without a massive Federal intervention, a lot of the Jersey Shore may never recover.

You do a favor for Obama, he does a favor for you. Just like the Godfather.

And they say Republicans are corrupt.

Obviously, Cuomo is not going to be Obama’s hand picked successor. The successor must come from the Chicago school, not the northeast one.

Yeah, I’ve heard that second homes are not part of the FEMA scheme. I doubt, though, that the people in this FEMA tent are vacationers. Most packed up in late September or early October.

Hillary will be the Rat 2016 nominee. That is why Bill campaigned so hard for Obama, to secure the black vote for Hillary in her 2016 run.

[ This is easy to see through. The WH is working to finish off Christie. ]

Good. That may be the one good thing to come from the Obama Administration. Christie is a backstabbing traitor. The worst type of scumbag!

this story is not about politics, it’s about government, and its about good government is not where every occasion is turned into an occasion for partisan politics

emergency response, as long as their is a FEMA in its present form, is not about partisan politics, it is about effective coordination between local, state and federal bureaucracies and teams as well as the NGOs like the RedCross

from a position of political philosophy, I am no big Christie fan; he is not Conservative enough for me

regardless, the article is likely correct in tone and substance, and what it speaks to is that Christie and his team are not seeking to make emergency response efforts an opportunity for partisan politics, for no better sake than partisan politics, so there is good cooperation with FEMA

and New York?

Cuomo and Floomberg are not being partisan, and surely have no political animiss toward Obama, they are just incompetent due to their inflated egos - quite common with New York politicians, and from which they build personal government machines that insist on each having more control yet often the official authority is said to be split between them

just look at the reconstruction at Ground Zero

a private owner holds a 99year lease on the property, and if he could have just done everything as best and efficiently as he good, new buildings there would have been completed and rented out long ago

but the property is owned by the Port Authority of New York & New Jersey, a mega, unrepresentative bi-state agency controlled (split) by the governors of NY & NJ

but, the ground zero redevelopment is supposed to be controlled by a New York City-New York State redevolment agency

but, its board represents the New York Governor’s office, the office of the Mayor of New York, and other city and state agencies as well as the two chief executives,

and a lower Manhattan redevelopment agency also is involved

and all of them have demanded their say

amd all those egos and all the divided & mixed authority and responsibility over the Ground Zero site is the reason construction at the site is only now showing some great progress, more than eleven years after 9/11

so when the article says that FEMA is getting more cooperation in New Jersey than in New York, I don’t see Christie seeking Obama’s good graces, I see the typical New York egos and incompetence

“Yeah, it is so hard to figure why evil Republicans would put politics aside in order to make sure that people get help, while Democrats (members of the party of true compassion) are just trying to control things for their own ends and make a name for themselves on the backs of people’s misery. Who could have ever seen that one coming?”

ditto

and check my post that adds some reference to just how New York City and state operate when it comes to “big” things

“Without a massive Federal intervention, a lot of the Jersey Shore may never recover.”

the “shore” might recover

I am not so certain that it should be taxpayers responsibility or taxpayer subsidized insurance or loans that should “recover” every single property (some on mere sand bars) that in some cases, in common sense terms, likely should have never been built where they were in the first place.

Already here in New Jersey we have started a program to buy out properties that lie in the worst flood prone section of the Passaic River. That is good government. Rebuilding everyone that knowingly sits like an annual target for Atlantic Ocean storms, just daring mother nature to just try and knock them over, is not my idea of good government.

If the taxpayers are forced to get involved, I am more in favor of buyouts than rebuilding, ultimately returning more of the shore to the natural tideland, wetland, green space barrier it was for everyone further inland, before so much development paved it over.

In a relationship, the mistress usually is quite accommodating. Why not Christie?

Ditto back at ya. Like you I am no big fan of Christie. Same reason; he's not conservative enough. But all the Christie bashing that is going on in the wake of the elections is ridiculous, and it diminishes the opportunity to show the lie of Democrat compassion by contrast between the New Jersey response and the gams being played in New York.

But then bitching and pointing fingers is always a lot easier than using reason.

I'm no fan of Christie's politics. That being said he did what had to be done to restore power and gas to the citizens of NJ. He waived what ever rule needed waiving (EPA, union, Sunday Sales, etc.) to allow help in from governor's all over the country. I heard today that we have either state troopers or national guard from another state helping keep out looters from shore communities.

And, if your could get internet access, set up one page with all relevant information.

So much more organized than NY.

There is going to be tremendous political pressure to rebuild even in places where nobody should be building anything by any objective measure. The businesses down there rely on customers in the peak summer season, and if you remove a third of the homes on those barrier islands a lot of those businesses will disappear.

I'm not saying it's a good idea to rebuild all the homes, mind you ... I'm just saying there's going to be a lot of folks in New Jersey (including the governor) lining up with their hands out asking Uncle Sam to foot the bill for it.

When they tried to leave, they were stopped by cops. When they tried to contact the press, they had their phones taken away from them

Where do they charge their phones? Wonder how the cops knew who they were calling?

It sounds like the cops are holding them hostage. Did you report this?
