(CNSNews.com) -- Although the Republican-dominant House of Representatives controls the federal purse strings, House Speaker John Boehner (R-Ohio) said that Tuesday’s election victory by President Barack Obama changed how he will approach the GOP goal of repealing the health reform law, saying that the president’s reelection made it “the law of the land.”
“Well, I think the election changes that. It’s pretty clear that the president was re-elected. Obamacare is the law of the land,” Boehner told ABC News’ Diane Sawyer in an interview Thursday when asked if the House GOP would still make repeal its mission.
However, Boehner also said that the law was still “on the table,” noting that he still considered it bad policy and that it was not off limits as he begins negotiations with Obama over key budgetary issues.
As House Speaker, Boehner can prevent any funding for Obamacare or any aspect of it through amendments to funding legislation, to a continuing resolution, or by simply not allowing a floor vote on the funding.
“I think there are parts of the health care law that are going to be very difficult to implement and very expensive and, at a time when we’re trying to find a way to create a path toward a balanced budget, everything has to be on the table,” he said in the ABC interview.
When pressed, Boehner clarified that no decision had been made yet over which parts of the law would be included in negotiations, saying that parts of the law could be on the table.
“There are certainly maybe parts of it that we believe need to be changed – we may do that, no decisions at this point,” he said.
Boehner repeated during the interview that he viewed Obama’s reelection and Republicans’ failure to achieve a Senate majority as a mandate from the American public for the two parties to work together, saying that it was simply the hand he was dealt.
“I may not like the five cards that were dealt to me but those are the cards I’ve got in my hand,” he said. “Now my job on behalf of the American people is to find a way to work with my Democrat colleagues and our Democrat President to solve America’s problems. If there was one mandate that came out of the election, it was [to] find a way to work together to address our problems.”
Boehner’s office clarified his remarks about repeal of Obamacare on Thursday, after excerpts of the interview were released to the public. His official Twitter account posted a message saying that he remained committed to “full repeal” of the law.
“ObamaCare is the law of the land, but it is raising costs and hurting #smallbiz. Our goal remains #fullrepeal,” Boehner tweeted.
Boehner spokesman Kevin Smith also clarified the Speaker’s intentions on Obamacare, saying that House Republicans were committed to repealing the law despite the reelection of its namesake president.
“While Obamacare is the law of the land, it is costing us jobs and threatening our health care,” Smith told the liberal website Talking Points Memo. “Speaker Boehner and House Republicans remain committed to repealing the law, and he said in the interview it would be on the table.”
Obama’s reelection has made repeal of the law extremely difficult for Republicans after they failed to secure a Senate majority and a President who would sign repeal legislation. Obama has repeatedly stated that he has no intention of negotiating over the law and Senate Democrats have refused to vote on multiple repeal bills sent to them by the House.

I don’t carry a ping list so once prepared the letter will, in draft, have to pass by word of pings from others. If it does not begin, and this will have to move quickly then all talk or typing will be as it is and for naught. Going to go at it. Will need input. The way we get to sequestration and a better deal that genuinely cuts the debt is by making sure we work towards a deal in public while saying no in private. If we say no in public (your plan), then Obama will go to the media and ask them for emergency powers or whatever he needs to borrow and spend more. The D-senate and enough scared house members (remember whose side the media is on) would be enough to pass something.
Or he could go the Fed route. The Fed is giving him a lot (fake ridiculously low interest rates) but they could be cajoled into giving him more. There are other ways he can get this done while your hypothetical leader rants and raves.

I think Obamacare will be a gift for the GOP. It's impacts will be fully known by 2014...and as of right now...I say stop being the party of opposistion...but the party of truth. Let the American people know they are going to let them have what they voted for and THIS is what it will do.

Ok, gotcha. The third party will only come about when one of the two parties is completely destroyed. The people on this thread calling for a strong R leader are only going to delay the formation of a viable third party.
Barry just wants bipartisan cover. Why do you insist on giving it to him? Give him the tax increases and massive defense cuts. The is the Age of Obama. Let them eat cake.
It’s important the GOP gives no ground on o-care amendments. Let it crash the “budget” and economy. Then trot out the dim talking points of “we tried it their way” for 2014 and 2016.
Everything has to be about 2014 and 2016 now. It is too bad the country is going to suffer but this is what the majority voted for. We need to get past this cliff. Then refocus the message on the layoffs and damaging o-care regs and fight like democrats. No more freelancing RINOs setting the message.

I would only ask that we try to keep to the core problem: the federal leviathan. That is the main reason we have other problems, States like Arizona and Texas could easily solve our illegal immigrant problems but the Feds crush even the slightest efforts to enforce existing laws. Other moral issues will be moot at the federal level once the federal government can’t fund them.

You have my word and my hand shake, will do the best possible. Vetting will be the key next week. TEA Party support must be possible. Then if it gets that far, it can be decided if it will be a republican effort (all included) or a select minority of Conservatives. It may not take but forty votes or less in the House to pull this off.
That is what I want. The problem is that Obama can end run around that having the media force the house to pass a bailout of some sort. It will be just like TARP and I guarantee that my rep (Wolf - VA) will cave and pass it. What I propose is to get the best deal possible by accepting all offers in public, rejecting them in private, and waiting for the D-senate to cave in to pressure from the defense industry (among others).
Get mad at Boehner all you want. The fact is Obama got reelected and the Dems. picked up 2 more seats in the Senate. Because Obamacare is the law and the Supreme court validated it, the Republican House cannot do a thing to change it without support from the Senate and Obama and we know that isn’t going to happen. So, get off his back on this.
I will be calling Louis Ghomert’s office first thing Monday morning, to ask if there is any way we can get a new speaker. Obamacare is still unconstitutional, John Roberts’ tortured logic notwithstanding. It is not the role of the federal government to dictate to US citizens that they must purchase any product, or engage in any commerce.
Simply saying it is a tax is not good enough, because their mandate requires a lot more action on the part of an individual than simply being taxed.
