Obama to make statement on economy Friday By Mark Felsenthal | Reuters – 48 mins ago

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Newly re-elected President Barack Obama will make a statement on the economy on Friday, the White House said, setting the stage for a showdown with congressional Republicans over contentious tax and spending issues.

The president is likely to discuss looming tax increases and government spending cuts - the so-called fiscal cliff - that would go into effect early next year unless Congress acts to prevent them. He is due to make the statement from the East Room of the White House at 1:05 p.m. (1805 GMT).

Obama, who defeated Republican challenger Mitt Romney on Tuesday in a race in which the two candidates offered different visions for jump-starting the sluggish economy, is not expected to put forward a new or specific plan.

Instead, he is more likely to urge Congress to tackle the fiscal cliff and try to cut the massive U.S. budget deficit. Analysts have said that if left unaddressed, the abrupt fiscal tightening would knock the economy back into recession.

Congressional Republicans have already begun to stake out their position on ways to spare the already modest economic recovery from a fiscal shock. House of Representatives Speaker John Boehner is scheduled to hold a news conference earlier on Friday.

The president's advisers told reporters earlier on Thursday that dealing with the fiscal cliff would be an immediate priority. The administration sees Obama's re-election an endorsement of his position that affluent Americans should see their taxes rise, they said.

You can be sure that I will not be watching or listening. I couldn’t stand him the first four years...good God, how will I ever make it through the next four years...When will this nightmare be over? (sadly, I don’t think it will...we are headed in dark, dark days)

“Boner still has to get the republican congress to go along with him, Boner should threaten a government shutdown - what else has he got left ?”

A statement which will be used as a campaign ad in 2014. Let it all happen, the crash, the recession, the job loss, everything.

The real, unfettered, no-holds-barred agenda is just beginning.

Hang on tight...it’s going to be a bumpy ride! If we survive
it will be because we are Americans and don’t give up!

What a weasel. I mean, he's the President of the United States, he's been in office for almost four years, he doesn't have to face another election, and he's too gutless to propose anything. Forget his politics, what a wuss.

Maybe you’ll get lucky and WON’T! :)

Enjoy it though! I never did get to tour the white house. It’s probably trashed out by now!

Their only answers: raise taxes! Blame Bush. Yes those chickens will come home to roust, like they have in Greece, France, etc.

Cheering the Visigoths! Rome is being sacked!

If Boner had any ‘nads here’s what the strategy should be:

Let the sequestration take place and the tax cuts expire for EVERYONE. Adjourn the House for a month to let all of tha sink in. Market crashes, the moochers checks stop coming, defense contrators lay off 100’s of thousands and all of that. Then in the spirit of bipartenship agree to a special tax rate for all of those earning over 1 million of 70%, no loopholes. My bet is that it sure would smoke out the hypocritcal leftists in Hollywood, Wall Street and Congress. Sure would be fun to watch.

I think you diagnosed the problem & the absolute correct solution to the problem. Whether we want to admit it or not, a slim majority >50% (at least of the ones who voted. The ones who stupidly chose not to vote really should not bitch or complain about any gubmint issue any longer) voted for 0bama & the RAT bastard socialist demoRATs. Amerika is now a socialist-marxist, pro-islamic, pro LGBT, anti-Christian, anti-conservative, anti-Israel, anti-freedom, anti-success nation. Therefore do exactly what you posted, and yes, I would love to hear the Hellywood liberals & black sports celebrities start to whine & complain about increasing their taxes dramatically and cutting back on their excess homes & hedonistic lifestyles.

I think you hit the solution directly on the head! If the RAT bastard demoRAT socialists & 0dumb0sh_t are going to bankrupt the country anyway, at least lets allow them to commence. Maybe in 4 years the American people will be so desperate and our country so demolished that the pro-socialists hordes will be ready for conservativism & freedom & free enterprise once again....and to dismantle the socialist nightmare once & for all. It's a dream & fantasy I know....but at least it's better than nothing.

I suspect the barter and black markets will start to grow once Zero gets all his tax hikes in.

You're right. That is why the ongoing "American Community Survey" asks some 70-80 incredibly intrusive questions like, how big your house is, how many bathrooms, bedrooms, hot or cold running water, type of heating, how much land do you own, do you raise any sort of produce, any type of business you run out of your home, etc. Even though the Commerce Dept & Census Bureau claim all this info & data is strictly confidential, all it will take is for a phone call from 0dumb0 to data mine this information and identify who are likely suspects when it comes to those who would be in a position to barter as you indicate. That is why my Community Survey went into the garbage and I never responded to their 2nd or 3rd requests.

Repubs either kick Boehner to the curb or they will be kicked to the curb.

No time for patty cake.

The ignorant know-it-alls, also known as liberals, will soon see what socialism does to the motivation of those targeted by it. I have zero desire to work my butt off for the benefit of people who have no respect for me and who have no qualms about using their vote to essentially steal from me. I will figure out some way to ‘lay low’ and live out my life without contributing to their selfish sloth.

All of this is a cruel joke. Both parties are making a big deal about cutting $100 a year for ten years out of an annual budget of $3.7 trillion. It is barely a rounding error. We need to cut back much more. The federal budget is now equal to 25% of GDP up from the norm of 18% to 20%. The political elite still doesn’t get it. We can’t get this reversed without some serious pain. The longer we delay it, the greater the pain.

Obama was reelected with 50% of the vote. He has no mandate.

I and many I know are not breaking their asses anymore. Today I left at quiting time even though there was urgent work. Atlas is shrugging and I’m positioning myself to go Galt.

Me too. Left at 4 pm promptly today, and will take vacation tomorrow for another weekend of MN deer hunting. Plus vacation next Friday to get ready for WI deer hunting during the week of Thanksgiving. then work for 3 weeks, then 2 weeks off for Christmas & New Year's Eve. No more all night work sessions for me.

Fortunately my 3 kids are all in their 20s & on their own, and capable of taking care of themselves.

There is no mandate.

Yet they claim it. And Boehner says “We’re ready to be led”.

It’s stupid beyond words. The guy has got to go.

Grab hold of that ring in his nose and throw him out of the Speakership.
