Mitt Romney's campaign got its first hint something was wrong on the afternoon of Election Day, when state campaign workers on the ground began reporting huge turnout in areas favorable to President Obama: northeastern Ohio, northern Virginia, central Florida and Miami-Dade.
Then came the early exit polls that also were favorable to the president.
But it wasn't until the polls closed that concern turned into alarm. They expected North Carolina to be called early. It wasn't. They expected Pennsylvania to be up in the air all night; it went early for the President.
After Ohio went for Mr. Obama, it was over, but senior advisers say no one could process it.
"We went into the evening confident we had a good path to victory," said one senior adviser. "I don't think there was one person who saw this coming."

The MSM will be ‘massaging’ themselves over the results of last Tuesday for quite some time, I’m afraid.
I have to say, I am usually not surprised by things that happen and I was surprised.
Romney:
“But . . . it was my turn! I was the annointed one! Just look at my hair and you’ll see what I mean. . . .
“What happened?”
We have been “Mugged” “Raped” and “ Cheated” by some of the best/ You will never see a White President Again, The Black and the Young Women who want to protect their “ Free Birth control, will rule from now on.
I feel so bad for him. He gave it his best shot, saying it was in God’s hands.
WE'VE GOT TO HIT THE PHONES HARDER THIS YEAR!!! CONGRESS: (202) 224-3121
I wish the Romney camp hadn’t conceded so early without demanding that all votes be recounted. Something is so wrong here. At least Allen West has the ba**s to fight back.
Is it too late for this? I know, just know there is major fraud here -
My soon to be famous quote on this election: “Why expect honest results with dishonest players?”
Totally agree. He conceded so quickly. Have all the military and absentee ballots been counted? I’d challenge Florida all by itself. Sitting in traffic in very blue Leon County today, I counted 7 Romney stickers just where I was sitting. Nothing about this makes sense.
Events just are what they are. Surprise is in the mind.

I was wrong.
Thinking about the whole ordeal, maybe it's time for retail politics to move away from the "cipher" and doubletalk stage, and into the open talk stage.
I was shellshocked also. absolutely could not beleive the loss. but after hearing about all the stuff the Democrats on election day it’s no wonder.
BUMP
I truly feel he is a noble man. I feel bad for all of us.
Just one of the many stories I heard about him from people coming forward.
The election was stolen, that is what they are saying without saying it.
But...it isn’t going to be addressed.
It would not have mattered who we ran, the outcome was not in our hands unless we resort to the same tactics.
We won’t win the next time either. They will always be able to throw their trump card and we will accept it.
Amazing if true. The numbers showing Obama was going to win were there for weeks. RCP polls showed it. Nate Silver was showing it. Even our own Freeper jackmercer showed the polls were going Obama’s way for weeks. You can read jackmercer’s stuff right here on FR. Jack’s just some guy doing this at home & he knew more than Romney’s team, wow.
Be happy you have Obama again 4 more years
Be happy you have Obama again 4 more years
I give up. The GOP will be so scared about losing 2014 they’ll do everything to do just that.
Between now and Christmas, with the meme of “Obama won”, they’ll go SLAMMED as not caring, etc. if they don’t agree with O and keep the tax rates the same for “middle and lower class” and keep the 2% payroll tax reduction unless “the poor have pay another $40-75 a month” for “tax cuts for the rich”, etc.
And they’ll cave because the election says the moochers want more from the producers. Of course, smart folks like us would take the opportunity to point out how the tax code is the problem and they should want lower rates and more control, but again the election shows that “scares” 51% of people who can’t get out of bed without a government alarm clock.
So Boehner and McConnell will bend over and give O anything he wants and STILL lose in 2014 because we will stay home. They didn’t take the 2010 election they won big and do a damn thing with it. Think they’ll fight now?
Let the GOP-2 die for good in 2014 and let’s reboot with REAL CONSERVATIVES running on a TRUE CONSERVATIVE message. This means no to Rubio, Jeb Bush, etc. And please, no more faux conservative retreads like Rick Santorum (as soon as he got up in the ranks in the Senate, he became a DC boy).
Or goodbye GOP...move over for the new Conservative/Constitution/Rand party. Producers unite! But alas, there are lots of good producers that play the Dem game (Apple, IBM, Microsoft and now even Walmart).
My husband and I were also shell shocked. We totally believed Romney would win based on the rallies, the reports of independents going to Romney and increased Republican voter registration, the bad economy, the debates, etc etc.
I wish I had known better because this let down was huge.
Same here. Now I'm just disgusted with those who voted for that same "worst President."
I hate to admit this but that Nate Silver and that other guy at Princeton U were spot on accurate to a frigging tee.
Well, I think in part the Democrats feinted the GOP into thinking that support for Barack was weak by holding all these show rallies to which almost nobody came. They knew all the while that their astroturfing, skunk works get-out-the-vote was going to prove powerful.
Mitt was shellacked by the presumptive shellackee.
I would like to know, with all the news reports of so many people standing in lines for hours to vote, how the vote totals are so far below 08’s?
Uh, no he wasn’t. Missed several senate races and was wrong on predicted margins. He was mostly right, but not “spot on” to a “frigging tee”
I feel bad for Romney. He was a good man. A good manager, but sorely lacked the conservative vision.
I honestly don't think he understood the vile and viscious nature of the left. I think, like GWB, he would have tried to win them over. There is no winning them over. They are deranged people, by and large. I think he may have left office much like Bush, broken. And I certainly don't know that Ann deserved what the left would have dished her way.
We are where we are. Many should have paid closer attention to things --like who was being imported and what their children were being indoctrinated with but all that, I guess, is in hindsight.
All, I know going forward is that when the left seizes power --they don't let go. Regardless of what it takes.
I’m shellshocked too. I think voters believed Romney’s argument that the economy was awful, jobs would not come back under Obama, and that national security has been weakened under the Kenyan but that just scared them and they voted for “free stuff” from Obama.
Some good came out of the Election. We in Las Vegas will not have to put up with of the Free Loaders, from Washington, and their wives. we won’t see them for another four years...Yeah!!!!!!!
Given the length of election campaigns these days, that would have been 2 or more years ago.
No one else saw this coming either ....
Got to wonder about THAT, eh?
Even the “professionals” didn’t see it coming so what the hell does it mean?
I have an idea.....
It is still an experiment however. I don't think enough people realize that we are just an experiment.
There is a history of polls being off, and we are always on the down side. I will ignore Dick Morris. His history is mixed, but he navigated Clinton for years successfully with poll data. I’ll ignore Rove’s prediction, too, as he also missed 2006 in a big way. When I heard Michael Barone say Romney big, that was significant. I think many felt the polls underestimated GOP turnout, either due to polling inaccuracy or to purposefully drive public opinion. It didn’t... the polls pegged that there was a significant number of base voters who weren’t going to show up.
The GOP should go GALT. What’s missing in America are POLITICALLY INCORRECT MEN. Put me up before Congress and I don’t give a F**K about the look on their faces when I call them on their acts of treason and their complicity in 0bama’s crimes by failing to prosecute and IMPEACH him.
Yup....and check out Freeper jackmercer right here on FR last week. He was as good as Nate Silver. He NAILED it. Fact is Rove & Barone & Morris were dead wrong. And jackmercer talks about Drudge just using the 2 bad polls” Gallup & Ras & screwing up all us conservatives, lol, and I’m one of them ! I trusted those 2 polls.
Even with increased early voting.
” “Vote with your lady parts.” It’s destroyed America. Along with schools teaching girls and even boys to HATE OLDER WHITE MALES (Mitt Romney); This too got 0bama supporters to the polls. Mix in much UNFOUNDED fear and UNFOUNDED hatred based on 0bama’s LIES and we get four more years of DOOM and possibly a Supreme Court Justice Eric Holder.”
We thought the Lena Dunham ad was disgusting. They knew exactly the audience they were targeting with that ad. Welcome to the new America.
I was looking at an article from pilotonline.com and was surprised to see that only Virginia Beach went for Romney among the Hampton Roads cities. Turnout for blacks was huge. Those folks waited in line for four hours in some cases to vote. I did not realize that the area was so liberal. I did not know the numbers were the same in 2008. I guess what shocks me the most is that black people who call themselves religious Christians could vote for a man who supports gay marriage.
I still believe there was massive fraud in key places.
As far as long lines go, our precinct had very long lines from the time it opened until after polls closed. It turns out that they had combined two precincts into one. But they had plenty of machines, so I think the turnout was high. We live in what I call Little Mexico though some of this side of town is heavy redneck and people who would rather pay less for land/house than those who want to live on the white side of town. The people in line with us were not voting for Obama. Yes, there were people talking about it the whole time we were in line. There was a lot of cynicism as well. People think their votes don’t matter but they show up anyway.
A lot of polls hit this election dead-on, just not the ones that Drudge was pushing every day.
I wasn’t surprised at all. I knew that people who voted for Obama in 2008 still were going to vote for him.
I knew there wasn’t a lot of excitement for either campaign this time around.
Even my just turned 18 year old son didn’t register to vote. He didn’t care. Of course, we live in Cali and he goes to college in Texas. He felt like his vote didn’t matter in either state. However, he was very apathetic about Romney.
I didn’t start feeling good about Romney until the debates, and I think the campaign was lost by then.
I’ll also add that I think Romney was pretty nasty during the primary and it turned a lot of people off. I know I didn’t like what was being said about Santorum. I thought Romney was nastier during the primary than during the main campaign. I think he turned a lot of people off to him during the primary.
“When I heard Michael Barone say Romney big, that was significant.”
did he have any numbers or analysis to back it up? I think we bought into anecdotes and assumptions, such as rally sizes and candidate demeanor.
Please folks. I don’t feel bad for him at all. He is a good man but c’mon he was forced on us. We didn’t want him and those that stayed home were just more principled than us that didn’t. He should probably thank God he wasn’t elected to be the captain of the Titanic like another writer pointed out. When the financial collapse comes as it surely would no matter who is president it will all be on zero
I heard a lot of the long lines were due to malfunctioning machines.
I don’t get the long lines at the polls. I have never had a line when I vote, and I live in San Jose, California (a large city).
“Yup....and check out Freeper jackmercer right here on FR last week. He was as good as Nate Silver. He NAILED it. Fact is Rove & Barone & Morris were dead wrong. And jackmercer talks about Drudge just using the 2 bad polls Gallup & Ras & screwing up all us conservatives, lol, and Im one of them ! I trusted those 2 polls.”
Trusting those 2 polls was like trusting a high tech growth mutual fund that was the best in the 90’s.
Well, well, Willard the Bland wonders why he lost. Simply put: he played it safe and lost. Like a prevent defense that never prevents the touchdown. Whatever you think of Newt, he would have told it like it was.
