HarperCollins Publishers will close its warehouse and distribution operation in Throop next summer and put close to 200 people out of work.
The industry is changing, said Erin Crum, spokeswoman for HarperCollins, a book publisher based in New York. It just makes sense for us to go this route as we shift to a more digital industry.
Ms. Crum would not disclose how many people will be laid off when the warehouse at the Keystone Industrial Park closes.
However, Craig Pawlik, principal officer of Teamsters Local 229 in Scranton, said 192 people will be furloughed. The union represents maintenance and warehouse workers at the facility.
They are stunned, Mr. Pawlik said. Their last day in Dunmore will be sometime in September 2013. About 230 people work in an adjoining office at the HarperCollins complex, including information technology, accounting, credit and collection and customer-service operations, said Austin Burke, president of the Greater Scranton Chamber of Commerce. None of the office workers will be affected by the warehouse closing, Ms. Crum said.

The Union Thug is stunned!
lolz
We need a new ping list for the stunned liberals as the economy falters
Scranton, PA.
I guess they thought Plugs Biden would save them.
Well, the people in PA voted for Pres. Hope and Change. Let them reap the whirlwind.
Kindles and ATM Machines, putting more hard-working Americans out of a job.
No worries. Scraaaanton (biden’s home) will be fine. These Union workers will have a very good future as wards of the government. They can look forward to be taken care of through longterm unemployment benefits and Medicaid!
Ain’t Obama great!!
That would be a good icon for the proposed STUNNED LIBERAL ping list
Bob Casey should have saved this business!
How about a list of companies where they are closing and the companies that are downsizing - I’ve already read about quite a few already this month. Coal miners are losing their jobs big time. Unemployment on the rise and stock market falling.
F em. They voted for Obama - elections have consequences.
Deal with it maggots.

Here is one list.
I'm waiting....tap, tap, tap.
While I am waiting, just heard from my local USPS letter carrier that the post office is going to 5 days a week and laying off 60,000 postal workers.
Great news for the administration!
Assuming half these folks find jobs the statistics will reflect over 100 new jobs ‘created’ by His Majesty personally. Since huge numbers now fall off the ‘unemployed’ list every month, this is a clear win for Obama.
Its a good thing we don’t have a free press, because they might report that the labor participation rate has steadily declined from 65.7% to 63.8% since Obama took office, a net loss of 2 million jobs or so? But we would hate to cloud people’s minds with reality.

“Family sustaining”? That’s the government’s job!
Oh, and what’s with this “family” thing anyway - that’s too “individualistic” and “independent” of a way of thinking.
Forget this “family” thing - the gov’t will provide for and protect you and educate you properly.
When these new waves of huge layoffs start taking effect, we will long for the prosperity days of 2009-2012. When 0bama comes to Congress looking for money to extend unemployment benefits, there will be no one to okay it. When the IRS takes up counting the revenues, they will fall off sharply due to the unemployment. It will be ugly. The whole “soup lines” thing will be a reality.
Added to LAYOFFS thread

No problem! Just keep printing and borrowing.
Maybe Hussein can make a deal with the Russians and the Chinese, say, 90% of all natural resources in America as collateral?
Even if they plan on doing more Kindle Books, they’re still going to need a book warehouse. I suspect that they’re mostly just using that as an excuse to move out of union territory into a right-to-work state, where the workers will demand much less in the way of benefits and do a real day’s work. Or maybe if they already have several warehouses, close down the most expensive one.
Every time another lib loses its job, an angel gets its wings.
Snort.
Expect someone to steal that as a tagline.
Couldn’t LOL cause i’m at work,so now my eyes are watering!
OMG!! I didn’t know that many so soon!
And damn, you are good with info! Thanks!
I notice several more layoff threads, wow.
This isn’t political, although I’m sure many comments will assume it is. Harper Collins no longer needs warehouses for paper books. That age is coming to an end. It’s been years since I bought a physical book. Warehouse jobs are falling to ereaders, as they should as technology renders physical books obsolete.
;>)
Gee it has not made the list on the Daily Job cuts yet... Welcome to Obamas aMeriKa 2012
Lay them all off. Obamas aMeriKa is a nation of takers and grifters....
Is there a thread listing all the layoffs and closings since the election?
Nice going PA, OBAMA OBAMA OBAMA drown in your own swill
I copied the one you posted and email it along w/others and asked them to forward to any liberal they know and include anyone w/children who voted for his anti-American POS should be arrested as they are not fit as parents nor as Americans!
I sent it to a liberal I know who has children - and I know it won’t sit well and that gives me great pleasure. Told them to warn people first before you shake their hand - because no one wants the blood you have on your hands!
Wish I knew more liberals - I ready to slam them! But I’m not attracted to EVIL, so I know only know that one - he said his family is but I think he is, also, but didn’t tell me because he didn’t want to receive my wrath. He’s my doctor and will see him in a few days. I can’t wait but not sure about him!
THANK YOU!
Consider it stolen.
You’re welcome to it..... ;>)
You’re welcome to it..... ;>)
Need a lay-off ping list.
YES!! Great idea to have a ping list. We will only hear about the big ones that are laying off and closing but as we see they are substantial.
I just heard from my brother (after I sent him the lists from here) about an office manager in a back surgeon's office in WV that the doctor just told his entire staff he's closing and going to set up an office in the hospital only. Two nurses and entire staff are out of work and the doctor no longer has a private practice. (What he built is no longer.)
Bottom line - people are out of work whether it's from a big co or not. But it is a great idea to have a ping list for all the layoffs/closings that are published.
