Why? They have all the benefits of citizenship but do not have to pay the income tax.

It’s not about votes.. It’s about 0bama getting the excuse he needs to CHANGE OUR FLAG. I’m thinking the color ‘yellow’ is top on his list. Bye bye old glory. Phase II of the grand Socialist transformation. Will probably have his ‘O’ or his picture on it, too.

The people who want this keep having these votes every few years. I guess they won't stop until the Puerto Ricans give them the answer they want.

I think statehood is a bad idea. It certainly isn't something to be rushed into on the basis of a slight majority in a nonbinding resolution. The Puerto Ricans are products of a different cultural tradition--Spanish-speaking and Catholic. The colonies which later formed the United States were English-speaking and 99% Protestant (seeing Spain as the enemy and generally holding anti-Catholic attitudes). A lot of Puerto Ricans may have moved to the mainland, but few if any non-Hispanic Americans have gone to Puerto Rico to live.

Statehood is irrevocable, or at least the outcome of the War between the States seems to have established that. What if PR became a state and twenty years later everyone thought independence was better? If they were allowed to leave, 600,000 lives were wasted to establish the principle that secession is not allowed.

That's in addition to a Puerto Rican state being a guaranteed two Democrat senators and five Democrat congressmen--and 7 electoral votes for the Democrat nominee for President.

As for the flag, we could either keep it at 50 stars and require Vermont to become a province of Canada, or add a star. 51 is 3 times 17--so could have a set of three rows of stars 8 across and a set of stars 9 across, alternating rows--might not look too bad. I remember when Hawaii became a state and my father thought there would be a problem with a 5 by 10 arrangement. They worked out something different.

Heck yes, we need Puerto Rico as another state. Then Cuba, Mexico and a few African states - just as long as we don’t get stuck with more of those constitution loving white people.

Oh, and load up on more dope smoking homosexuals too... lots of ‘em.

AND, female with breathing vaginas.... I just learned on FR that those even exist, so I’m down for more breathing vaginas... I just don’t want them to talk.

No, I am not racist, but today - I’m starting to feel a wee bit “racist leaning”.

I have an even better idea. Let’s let all of those people who want to be a state move to the mainland and then those of us who are true patriots, conservatives, and want a minimal government all move to the island and make it our own country.

About 30 states want to be freed from the US right now. PR can have their spots on the flag.

They should stay with the deal they’ve got. Why jump on a sinking ship? What’s in it for them? I mean the people; what’s in it for the politicians is obvious.

The measure will require approval from the US Congress

I'm sure the House voting this down will do wonders for the GOP and the Hispanic vote.

Everything is a racial booby-trap.

Well, Hell, why not adopt Raul Castro and all his hermanos?

It'd be an improvement over Hussein.

If I am not mistaken, they voted for statehood once before. I think that Congress voted against it though.

The theory bing, what House member wants to lose their seat, because the constitution calls for a mandatory 435 House seats. The moment Pourto Rico becomes a state, the country must be redistricted to allow for the new increase of population and allow Pourto Rico to have it’s share of Congressmen.

Considering the size of their population they would get about 5 members. Which Congressmen are willing to vote against their own interest? Remember, we are talking about politicians here. One thing they all have in common is they are narcicistic to a point.

So pourto Rico can continue voting for statehood, and they will continue getting denmied by Congress.

Now, let’s say they get statehood, would Obama want to start campaigning for 6 more so he can then claim was actually phsycic when he stated that he campaigned in all 57 states back in 2008?
