KANSAS CITY, Missouri - Missouri Republican U.S. Senate candidate Todd Akin, who sparked a furor in August with comments about "legitimate rape," was defeated by Democratic incumbent Claire McCaskill on Tuesday.
Until the rape comment, Akin was considered the favorite to beat McCaskill in a state that has trended Republican and voted for Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney on Tuesday.
But the race reversed course after Akin's comment to a television station that women have natural defenses against pregnancy from "legitimate rape." The comment drew scorn from state and national Republican leaders who called on him to drop out of the race.
Akin apologized for his remarks but refused to withdraw. He regained support of some top Republicans but lost significant financial backing.

It’s the stupid, stupid.
Your Post #10 is spot-on.
Both Mourdock and Akin were more than likely gonna win seats in the US Senate until the connection between mouth and brain shorted out.
Akin’s most egregious comment was about a woman being able to biologically fend off a rape-induced pregancy. There’s really no wealth of medical knowledge that can back up a stupid statement like that.
Both these guys should have been smart enough to realize that the media would spring an abortion-related question on them. But they weren’t - and now we have two fewer seats in the US Senate because of it.
I suspect that you are correct.
Furthermore though Romney won the state by 10 points, the Democrats captured every statewide office except one.
It also didn't help that McCaskill's prime commercial for the last week of the campaign had Romney and McCain attacking Akin -- playing their words of public rebuke over and over again.
What we are finding out is we cannot talk about rape, abortion, immigration, traditional marriage, taxes, economics, Benghazi, Muslims, Israel, energy, environment, blacks, Latinos, women, or Obama. We are pretty well fenced in.
Nonsense.
No, it’s not nonsense, the Republicans cower in fear of the term racist, they willingly place themselves in harms way by reaching across the isle so as to not look intolerant while the Democrats and the media smile and lunge at their collective backs with a very sharp knife! They have won because they have convinced a generation that white men are evil and the rules don’t apply to minorities, they are above the law! The Democrats aim to make slaves of us all!
If you are against abortion under all circumstances, all you have to do is say that you believe it is a human life.
These guys begin discussing theology!
