KANSAS CITY, Missouri - Missouri Republican U.S. Senate candidate Todd Akin, who sparked a furor in August with comments about "legitimate rape," was defeated by Democratic incumbent Claire McCaskill on Tuesday.
Until the rape comment, Akin was considered the favorite to beat McCaskill in a state that has trended Republican and voted for Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney on Tuesday.
But the race reversed course after Akin's comment to a television station that women have natural defenses against pregnancy from "legitimate rape." The comment drew scorn from state and national Republican leaders who called on him to drop out of the race.
Akin apologized for his remarks but refused to withdraw. He regained support of some top Republicans but lost significant financial backing.

Yeah, let’s have more conservative candidates with ignorant comments.
I suspect that a good many of the moderates who refused to allow Akin to heal, actively voted democrat just to prove their point.
Moderates are lying, manipulative, bottom feeding, scum. Never doubt it and you can’t go wrong.
despite that, how the HELL did this leftwing moonbatsh*t crazy lunatic still get enough votes to win? Missouri isn’t exactly a Democrat blue state by nature or is it?
The pols would do well to just have a copy of a 4-D ultrasound at the third trimester handy and remind people that Democrats think it is OK to kill this.
I wonder if it would have helped Akin if EVERY SINGLE NEWS REPORT, AD, OR DISCUSSION could have mentioned the phrase “legitimate rape” THREE times each, instead of only once?
As far and all news media was concerned, the word “Akin” = Legitimate Rape, and will always and forever be so.
Akin was legitimately raped by a biased media.
If this doesn’t teach the GOP to stop talking to the Libtard Whorenalist Media I dont know what will.
Agree, it makes no difference how conservative Akin was now, does it?
I won’t say I’m glad he lost, but I will say that if we don’t put forward conservative candidates who are smart enough to not shoot their mouths off like Akin and Mourdock did, we are not going to win elections.
Being a good conservative is not the same as being a good candidate.
The only problem I had with Akin’s comments on rape is that at least one of his comments was woefully wrong biologically speaking. No woman’s uterus can tell if a pregnancy was planted by a rape or an act of love and then spontaneously expel one started from rape.
The comment about legitimate rape was actually accurate. As a woman of many years of age I can tell you that when I was growing up rape meant being physically and usually violently forced into sexual intercourse and that was IT.
Femitwits have watered the definition of rape so it no longer has any serious meaning. It has been reduced to a bad joke by the Left. They say that if a girl wants sex tonight with someone..anyone and in the morning regrets it she can call it rape and even press charges and sometimes it legally sticks. Also, per DOJ stats, rape is the crime most often FALSELY charged. Duke LaCrosse happens every day without the news coverage.
To my mind nonsense stuff like that is not not legitimate rape. But words no longer have meaning. Only feelings do. And Akin should have avoided the entire topic. We should avoid discussing these things until we have political power and then we let them know who we really are. That’s the way they do it.
You may be on to something.
Unfortunately, Akin shot himself in the foot and became McCackle’s choice as an opponent. It was a perfect storm.
There is no such thing as a “moderate”. They are just dishonest, weak or cowardly leftists. They just want to go in that direction a little more slowly and cautiously. But they are always eventually willing to take the next step.
What is it that they want to moderate? The good or the bad?
Who would want to moderate the good. And any decent person should take a stand against the bad rather than wanting to moderate it.
Yes, indeed.
And, who led the charge? Karl Rove and his elitist buddies. They kicked a good man when he was down. Cowards!
Of all the losses last night, Akin's loss was among the most tragic and unnecessary.
Why would any Republican talk about abortion, rape and God’s will? Only a full-tilt idiot. Talk about handing people a stick to beat you with ...
Nothing like received wisdom.
They’ve moderated the GOP into a coma while the democrats continue rushing into marxism at breakneck speed.
Moderates are the enemy within the gates.
Look at it any way you wish but he said it. There’s no way to make that statement sound good. There’s no way to cover it.
Candidates matter. we can have the better plans.the better idea’s the better everything. None of it matters unless we have candidates who are A:acceptable to people and B: able to keep their foot out of their own mouth’s.
Look no further than the top of the ticket. The field was atrocious. Romney was the least offensive of an offensive lot.
She won because Democrats supported Akin in the primary.
She also spent millions of dollars supporting Akin in the primary.
He should have stepped down when that was revealed.
Akin didn’t help himself because he said stupid things.
She did stupid things (like back Obamacare) and still won.
