Perfect example of too many lawyers with nothing to do so lets take a private organization to court so we can make a name for ourselves and get higher rates.
Maverick professors? Get real. Academia is crammed full with small thinkers who demand conformity to the accepted dogma in every field. Breaking away from the accepted “correct” thoughts is grounds for non-advancement and ridicule. Academia is the last place to look for people capable of actually using their brains.

Actually it looks like the University had a set of stupid requirements that they try to apply to all student organizations and was going through the motions. Mr. (Administrator) was not paying any attentions whatsoever and tried to blow off Adams with a form letter.
When he got the legal documents, he finally sat took notice and fixed the problem.
No malice, just organizational inertia and the actions of stupid people in large numbers.
I think that's because they are so few. The vast majority of the Liberal Arts instructors agree with the anti-First Amendment reflexes of the college.
