Bush did not defend the Republican brand, and McCain did so only in the most perfunctory fashion. So much flank was opened up for the media’s trashy, meretricious (not meritorious) attacks on the GOP.

McCain-Palin were actually leading Obama-Biden in a number of polls six weeks before the election. Then came the financial crisis chiefly caused by actions taken under the Clinton admin. But virtually all libs and a few ignorant conservatives blame Bush for the crisis. Obama took the lead after the meltdown. That's what won him the election...falsely blaming Bush for the crisis.
