The Redskins Rule is a trend involving NFL football and presidential elections.
This coincidence has held true since 1940.
The Redskins moved to Washington in 1937. Since then, there have been 18 presidential elections. In 17 of those, the rule applied:
If the Redskins win their last home game before the election, the party that won the previous election wins the next election. If the Redskins lose, the challenging party's candidate wins.
Heres a rundown of the Redskins Rule games since 1940:
1940 Redskins 37, Steelers 10 Roosevelt (D) defeats Willkie. 1944 Redskins 14, Rams 10 Roosevelt defeats Dewey. 1948 Redskins 59, Boston Yanks 21 Truman (D) defeats Dewey. 1952 Steelers 24, Redskins 23 Eisenhower (R) defeats Stevenson. 1956 Redskins 20, Browns 9 Eisenhower defeats Stevenson. 1960 Browns 31, Redskins 10 Kennedy (D) defeats Nixon. 1964 Redskins 27, Bears 20 Johnson (D) defeats Goldwater. 1968 Giants 13, Redskins 10 Nixon (R) defeats Humphrey. 1972 Redskins 24, Cowboys 20 Nixon defeats McGovern. 1976 Cowboys 20, Redskins 7 Carter (D) defeats Ford. 1980 Vikings 39, Redskins 14 Reagan (R) defeats Carter. 1984 Redskins 27, Falcons 14 Reagan defeats Mondale. 1988 Redskins 27, Saints 24 Bush defeats Dukakis. 1992 Giants 24, Redskins 7 Clinton (D) defeats Bush. 1996 Redskins 31, Colts 16 Clinton defeats Dole. 2000 Titans 27, Redskins 21 Bush (R) defeats Gore. 2004 Packers 28, Redskins 13 Bush defeats Kerry, ending the streak. 2008 Steelers 23, Redskins 6 Obama (D) defeats McCain, restoring the Redskins Rule.

Romney (R) defeats Obama.
Heck yeah! It never hurts to have some more mojo on our side! Hopefully this depresses the commie left wing vote!
I was paying attention to this. I bet many of libs were also hoping to rub this in our noses. All I got to say is, “Haaa, Ha!”
Even better, use the Modified Redskins Rule. The Modified rule goes like this: if the Redskins lose their last home game before the election, the party whose candidate won the popular vote in the previous presidential election will lose the election.
If you use this version of the election, the Rule is 18/18, because Gore won the popular vote in 2000 and Kerry lost in 2004.
Even 17/18 is a fantastic track record, better than the pollsters and pundits.
I credit its success to the fact that while the pundits use warped and false logic, the Redskins Rule uses the superior method of no logic at all. No logic > false/twisted logic :)
Ha I was coming to post this and you beat me to it!
Well I didn’t want to post it in the 4th quarter, so I waited until it went final.
Revenge of the (Black) Panthers. That’s what they get for dissing the Panther’s house during the DNC.
Well....I have to confess that I was pulling for the Redskins, as Robert Griffin is from my hometown, but if this loss in any way contributes to a Romney victory, then it will have been worth it!

Did Cam Newton and the Panthers predict a Romney win?
Chris Strauss, USA TODAY
If history holds, Cam Newton and the Carolina Panthers may have helped swing Mitt Romney the election.
4:57PM EST November 4. 2012 - Carolina Panthers fans are likely pretty pleased with their team’s ability to win for the first time since Week 2, but one man is likely even happier.
History dictates that the Panthers 21-13 victory over the Washington Redskins at FedEx Field bodes well for Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney. In the 18 presidential elections that have taken place since the Redskins moved to Washington in 1937, 17 have been predicted by the team’s performance in its final home game prior to the election.
I heard about the Redskin rule for the first time today as I listened to the Redskins game on a national radio station. The broadcasters explained it late in the fourth quarter. It really made my day.
bump!
