After lagging for months at historic lows, Mitt Romneys personal popularity has advanced in the final weekend to its highest of the 2012 campaign, rivaling Barack Obamas. But Obama pushes back with greater enthusiasm among his supporters and the race itself remains a tie.
Fifty-four percent of likely voters in the latest ABC News/Washington Post tracking poll express a favorable opinion of Obama overall, the most basic measure of a public figures popularity. Yet 53 percent now see Romney favorably a majority, remarkably, for the first time.
Its a dramatic gain for Romney, who emerged from the Republican primaries as the least popular major party candidate in polling back to 1984 and remained there up to the debates. Just 40 percent saw him favorably as recently as late August, and it was essentially no better, 44 percent, after the party conventions.
The presidential debates clearly helped him: Sixty-two percent of likely voters describe Romneys performance in the debates as a factor in their vote, and those who do so are a broad 23 points more likely to see him favorably overall, 61 percent vs. 38 percent. Substantially fewer cite Obamas handling of the response to Hurricane Sandy as a factor in their vote, 49 percent.

Most Obama voters are not going to pay attention to a damn thing throughout his presidency let alone the election cycle. But all the Democrats are going to have to do is a last-minute GOTV push, tell them they have to vote to save Obama, and they’re going to turn registered voters into likely voters. Their attention spans are going to be so small, it’s not helpful to push them until the last minute, so they wouldn’t have shown up in previous polls as likely voters, just registered voters. He’s a celebrity and his sycophants worship him without knowing a thing about him.
Sandy bounce and Chris Christie’s “endorsement” of Obama influenced the Indies.
That bounce probably continues to fade away between now and Tuesday though. Romney should be able to close strong.
It is going to be close, but barring another November Surprise, I think Romney takes it by a slim margin.
Yep, those Obama rally crowds of 25 to 2000 are just bursting with enthusiasm.
Quite interesting way they stated it though. Either way if they are his "supporters" they are likely going out to vote for him. I suppose the amount of "enthusiam" will depend on how many times each of those supporters vote for him. LOL!
One Romney ralley in OH on Friday drew more people than three Obama rallies in OH combined. That really sounds like Obama supporters are more enthusiastic.
I call total bs. Every polll I’ve seen in the last 6 months indicate Reps are way more likely to vote. This is pure MSM baloney. Are there internals?
I can smell their desperation from here. It absolutely reeks of terror.
Just who do they think they're kidding? They've seen Romney's and Obama's rallies. They know full well that Obama is only pulling about a tenth of the attendance that Romney is, and that Romney's been winning the enthusiasm gap since at least the first debate.
The MSM is thoroughly discredited by their shameless shilling for their plummeting messiah. He's tanking hard, and is about to lose in a landslide, and they know it.
Sweet tears.....sweet tears...
Fear of losing government handouts and freebies can cause a lot of “enthusiam” among the freeloaders.

The Mediacrats spent 4 years doing everything they could to destroy the Conservative movement. The spiked stories, they outright lied and now they are trying to save face by giving Romney enough platitudes in the event he does win.
Isn’t going to work. America knows what the media did and if Romney wins, the consequences for their first lie will not be pretty.
This isn’t going to be close.
Mitt Romney was truly tested in the GOP primaries; he stayed steady and resolute. Remembering the FReeper lack of enthusiasm for Mitt and the preference for Palin, Bachman, Perry, Cain, Gingrich and Santorum - it’s heartening to see how conservatives are rallying around Romney to defeat Obama.
JUMP LIKE YOU MEAN IT!
I agree - I expect voter turnout to mirror rally attendance which will make for a comfortable disposing of Zero.
If it wasn’t for stupid white guilt ridden liberals and the dishonest unethical media, we wouldn’t be in such a tight race. I pray this isn’t Bush v. Gore all over. We have a very different supreme court. I wouldn’t wish another four years of Obama on my worst enemy. When Romney wins I won’t be gloating. I’ll be on my knees thanking God.
ABC News? Consider the source, their bias rivals the NY Times.

It is troubling to see Romney losing Independents. Maybe it's not 50-50 as this poll would indicate, but he once had a two to one advantage and that has eroded.
It is positive to see that Romney is picking up 97% of his party while Obama is only picking up 93% of his.
We truly are a Balkanized nation. If Obama wins, the Balkanization will be greatly exacerbated. If Romney wins, he will have his work cut out for him to pull the two polar opposite sides together somewhat - if that is even possible at this point.
