In the aftermath of Hurricane Sandy people with no meteorological training at all are climbing high atop media soap boxes, proclaiming that Hurricane Sandy is part of a new normal of extreme weather. Robert Puentes, a senior fellow with the Brookings Institutions Metropolitan Policy Program said Since we keep seeing large scale storms the derecho this summer, Irene, Isabel it may be wise for transit and infrastructure planners and officials to think of these as part of a new normal, This claim is based on the often repeated warning that the increase of atmospheric carbon dioxide is causing the weather to become different than it was in the past, therefore creating a new normal. In other words, in the past the weather was normal, now because of the way we make energy, it is different and its our fault and we better do something about it, i.e. control the weather.
The Governor of New York and the Mayor of New York city have no training in meteorology or hurricanes but made statements implying that Sandy was the result of climate change. Governor Cuomo said These are extreme weather patterns. The frequency has been increasing. He has not done his homework with respect to hurricanes. Research by Dr. Ryan Maue shows that global hurricane activity has not increased since 1978 and has declined since the early 1990s. Meteorologist Joe DAleo quoted Dr. William Gray, the famous hurricane forecaster from Colorado State University, who predicted the current period of increased North Atlantic Hurricanes back in the 1980s. Dr. Gray said the increase will be due to changes in the ocean warming and cooling cycle know as the AMO. Hurricanes are not new to New Jersey or New England.

“A Sign of the ‘New Normal’?”
No, because that is grammatically incorrect. Not the New Normalcy/Normality/Normalness, either.
We waited......and waited....Nothing....nada....0 disasters.

The Great Storm of October 29, 1693: Virginia to Long Island
A tremendous storm, possibly tropical in origin, changed the course of rivers and modified the coastline from the Delmarva Peninsula to Long Island. It is believed that Fire Island (just east of New York City) was bisected by the storm. The same apparently occurred to many coastal portions of the Delmarva Peninsula and region around Chesapeake Bay.
Sounds like a more-powerful version of Sandy to me, and hitting on the same day. So much for Sandy being caused by human-caused global warming.
We’re still waiting. We are in the longest period on record without a major hurricane hitting the US.
I believe whatever Algore says. (S)
“Sounds like a more-powerful version of Sandy to me, and hitting on the same day. So much for Sandy being caused by human-caused global warming.”
No, that storm was caused by European settlers exploiting the indigenous peoples, don’t you know?
/sarc
The liberals are really pushing hard on Sandy being caused by global warming.
Does anybody really believe that this would have been avoided, if only Congress had passed Obama’s cap and trade bill????
Does grammar matter to the liberals who push their theology on all of us????
Even more interesting that this colonial storm happened during the little ice age, yet was more powerful, offering possibility that correlations, if not relationships between temperature and storm formation, are even so much as simple as pseudoscience paints them. Now, if only some people would actually start embracing real science, which involves a desire to genuinely learn more.
A cat 1 in a hurricane prone area during hurricane season sounds damn normal to me.
How dare you want to bring scientific principles into this!!!
Al Gore has declared that the debate is over!!!! Global warming is responsible for everything!!! Case Closed!!!!
Al Gore even declared that global warming is a “moral issue”!!! Well, that settles it, we’re immoral if we don’t agree with Obama’s cap and trade plans!!!!!
There is no “normal” with the weather. I laugh at forecasters talking about the “normal” temperature for a calendar date. Bull$shit. Weather varies. It changes.
why do the liberals blame everything on global warming?
Hurricanes happen, storms happen, and have happened for eons. Yet these liberals say that these storms are so unusual, that they must be caused by global warming. How do they figure? What logic is used by liberals to come to these conclusions?
And, how do the liberals explain that there have been numerous ice ages and warming periods in geologic time? During the last ice age, Chicago was buried under a mile of ice. Haven’t we seen considerable global warming since then, since the glaciers which covered that area are long gone?
Do the liberals think that Cro-Magnon man drove SUVs and had coal fired power plants, which warmed earth to end the ice age???
why do the liberals blame everything on global warming?
I grew up with family stories of drought, flood, snow, cold and heat.
Idiotic statement!
We do not make "energy" in any way, shape, or form! God made all the energy that exists at the instant of creation. It is all the energy that ever was, now is, and ever will be.
We convert energy from one form to another to suit our purposes. Every time we make such a conversion we rely on a difference of potential to extract some of the energy (in a differing form) to power our lifestyle with a bit of the original energy "lost" (it appears as an increase in entropy). Think about energy in it's various forms. Potential energy flows "downhill" (an avalanche falls from a mountain into the valley below, never the other way!). Water flows downhill (same!). Electricity flows from a high voltage (potential) to a lower (ground). Heat flows from a higher temperature to a lower temperature.
You may pump water uphill, rocks may be conveyed to higher ground, you may charge a capacitor to a high voltage, and you may "pump" heat from inside your house to the outside with an air conditioner. It is the "hills and valleys" in the potential fields that allow us to extract energy. In every one of these reversals of the normal flow of energy, some energy is lost and remains unavailable.
That loss represents entropy. Think of it as a gradual lowering of the "potential" to use energy. The valley gradually fills so avalanches can no longer fall. In like manner all potential fields (electrical, gravitational, thermal) become flatter as time goes forward. It is the "hills and valleys" in the potential fields that allow us to extract energy.
One further note; Increasing entropy can be visualized as an arrow that points in the direction of the future. It thus defines time as increasing entropy. When all potential fields have flattened out, entropy can no longer increase and thus time stops. All of the energy originally put into our universe is still there but it is no longer available to us inside the universe. We can no longer reach it to use for our purposes.

Yep. That was the whole point of his piece.
The whole idea that homosapiens on a a tiny planet in our Solar System in the Milky Way galaxy can control the temperature of a planet in the Universe doesn’t even pass the laugh test.
You know what they say about a big lie...
