Imagine that the Church of the Holy Sepulchre in Jerusalem the traditional site of the crucifixion and resurrection of Jesus has been taken over by Cromwellian Puritans. The new owners of the shrine plan to send bulldozers in, replacing the old church with a monstrous building resembling a concrete spaceship. This is so pilgrims can pray without being distracted by superstitious icons. Also, the Old City will be buried under hotels that make Vegas look like Venice.
It wouldnt happen, would it? Christians would fight to the death to preserve Jerusalem. So would Jews and Muslims. And, for once, theyd have the support of secular politicians and scholars, horrified by the prospect of an act of cultural vandalism unprecedented in modern times.
Unprecedented until now, that is. The long-cherished ambition of Saudi Arabias ruling Wahhabi sect to smash up the ancient buildings of Mecca and Medina is nearing fruition.
In Mecca, the house of one of Mohammeds wives has been demolished to make space for public lavatories. His birthplace may disappear, too, as part of King Abdullahs scheme to complement the skyscrapers and shopping malls with a Grand Mosque fashioned from the same materials as a multi-storey car park in Wolverhampton.
As for Islams second holiest place, the city of Medina, a recent article by Jerome Taylor in the Independent revealed a megalomaniac plan to pull down three 7th-century mosques. Taylor added: Ten years ago, a mosque which belonged to the Prophets grandson was dynamited. Pictures of the demolition that were secretly taken and smuggled out of the kingdom showed the religious police celebrating.
Only a small minority of the worlds billion Muslims are Wahhabis, despite the tens of billions of petrodollars spent by the Saudis propagating their creed.

They don’t fret, they know that there’s no danger to mass-murder and pedophilia.
Thanks MinorityRepublican.
If the poison of secularism has infected the Islamic Royal Family, than possibly there is hope that Islamic fanaticism might be blunted by its effects.
Pipe dream I know...but any desecration of Mecca is a good thing IMO.
The islamists should get Rachel Maddow to stand in front of a bulldozer.
I can see it now! Pay per View! “The Bull Dyke versus the Bulldozer! The Rachel Rematch!”
Don’t celebrate yet. They could be making the way for something even more horrendous than fanatical Islam. A New World Order, where religion is replaced by the State or something like it. Remember, Nature abhors a vacuum; *something* will fill the void.
That picture of Mecca is amazing. I had no idea they had built that huge, ugly skyscraper right next to the Mecca Mosque. What an eyesore! If I were Muslim, which I am not, I would be rather miffed that something with a little more aesthetic appeal and compatability with the historic surroundings would have chosen instead.
This should have been done courtesy of the US military on Sept. 12, 2001. We should have destroyed Mecca and Medina.
Instead, we have had 11 years of additional terrorist attacks and threats fromn the "Religion of Peace".
They’ll never dynamite the Grand Mosque or Kaaba.
Too much money to be made during the Hajj. Millions of muzzies making their forced “pilgrimage” means gigabucks for the house of Saud. Forever.
No, it’s not secularism. They’ll be replacing these mosques with others, probably even bigger. But with the Saudi royal family, it’s all about money, and the old mosques were blocking an income source for them. The new mosques will better combine the sharia aspect and the money making aspect, and in addition, will get rid of various “un-Islamic” things (such as the occasional figurative art) found in the old mosques, many of which were originally churches.
So? Their ugly landscape, their ugly false religion. I don’t care at all about their archaeology or cultural heritage.
It’s just a warning: don’t let them immigrate to your country, don’t let the Wahhabis fund schools of fanaticism and endow university chairs outside of Muslim lands.
Because someday, your great-great-grandchildren, if they survive, may see Saint Peter’s Basilica and Buckingham Palace and the Yorkshire Minster and Notre Dame de Paris and Mount Rushmore and the White House and the Smithsonian and Saint Patrick’s Cathedral blown to rubble, in order to put an end to idolatry.
That's why these mega hotels are springing up. This is also exactly why Jesus chased the money changers out of the temple. They were ripping off the foreigners who came and had to exchange money for the temple tax, which was a religious obligation. These hotels are being built to house people who are forced to make a pilgrimage.
By the way, that clock tower is what the Saudis are lobbying the UN to replace Greenwich Mean Time as the global standard for time.

Skyscrapers next to the Shrine? The whole thing looks tacky, sort of like Vegas in Arabia.
I have no problem with erasing Islam’s icons.
I have no problem with erasing Islam’s icons.
The Saudis did this before, in the early 19th century during the first Saudi Kingdom. In 1805, the Saudis took Mecca and Medina. They destroyed many shrines, attacked Ottoman caravans, and finally declared that the Ottoman Sultan was no Caliph. The Saudis also invaded Iraq and persecuted the Shia, razing parts of Karbala. The Ottomans invaded and defeated them.
I recall reading that the old ruined structure purported to be the former home of the big old Mo himself was demolished about ten years ago, the claim was that it was becoming a revered place, and they couldn’t have that.
Love to see that entire unholy city erased.
Starting with that fugly clock tower.
