Cancel the Marathon
Forbes ^ | 11/2/12 | Greg McNeal

In an act of sheer idiocy, Mayor Michael Bloomberg decided that the New York City Marathon should still be held. His decision comes despite the fact that the city is still struggling to recover from “Superstomr Sandy.” We’re talking about a city where children are dumpster diving for food, yet the Mayor thinks an event where out of town runners trot through storm damaged boroughs while being handed free energy bars and water is a good idea?

The marathon will kick off in Staten Island where bodies are still being pulled from the rubble. The marathon is still a go, despite the fact that Staten Island Borough President James Molinaro is pleading for help from the Red Cross and other volunteer organizations. Where are the volunteers? Well, they are descending on New York City for a race that has been described in ordinary times as a “grueling feat of logistics.” It’s an event that requires dozens of medical volunteers to tend to runners and hundreds of police to close roads and direct traffic.

Aren’t medical volunteers and police the exact people we want focused on the victims of Sandy?

How can this sporting event possibly be the right thing for the people of New York?

You heard of ‘running with the bulls’? This will be ‘running with New York's sewer rats’. The rat infestation is supposed to be real bad after the water recedes. Not to mention the other ‘rats in NYC.

I have visions of the real people of Manhattan blocking the run. Is it Sunday? By Sunday those people will be very angry.

Doesn’t the marathon require police security? Don’t the police already have enough on their plate in the aftermath of the hurricane?

If children are dumpster diving for food is it because their idiot parents are passed out on the floor on drugs?

This is making the mayor look really bad. I like that.

But on the other hand canceling the marathon would mean millions of dollars in canceled hotel rooms, taxi rides, people buying steaks and wine and cocktails ( and tips for wait staff and bartenders and cabbies), theater tickets, horse rides in Central Park, etc.
The people working in these businesses depend on this money coming in for their lives.

Just because some are suffering doesn’t mean others should not be allowed to not suffer.

It starts Sunday at 10 or 11 AM. Having done it once, it requires massive logistics as normally it gets about 40K participants. Big deal for the whole city, with that many visitors, for hotels, restaurants, even shows. The runners come from around the world. It should be cancelled.

children are dumpster diving for food

Maybe they should strap backpacks on all the runners and fill them with Romney's canned goods.

They could either toss them out to cheering residents, or use the cans as self-defense weapons against rioting ghettoRATs.

Just what they need right now: an additional 40,000 people coming into the city who will require food, shelter, water, police protection, possible medical assistance, etc. How the hell can Bloomberg possibly think this is a good idea?

WHAT IF THEY GAVE A MARATHON AND NOBODY CAME

I think New Yorkers know what to do.

Why not ask the marathon entrants to run around and help people? Use their energy in a positive and productive way. Give medals to those who perform the most charitable acts or something.
