He was running guns to terrorists in Syria through the Turks. The Turks left the meeting with Stevens without incident. Once the Turks left, the attacks started.
A better question who be, why did Stevens meet with the Turks in Benghazi instead of Tripoli? I can only image it is safer in Tripoli, more comfortable in Tripoli and a whole lot easier to fly into Tripoli. My tentative answer is there is something tangible in Benghazi of mutual interest to Stevens and the Turks. I think when we know what was stored at the CIA Annex, then we will know the answer.
A little knowledge of history may help in understanding the Ottoman's desire for a Caliphate and at what lengths that they will go to establish their empire again.
