This appears to me a major news story that is simply being squashed. We have a highly educated terrorist who attempted to molotov-cocktail a busy VA mall's food court. Where is the press on this ?

I don’t think it’s squashed, it’s just lack of interest. Obviously, the fact that no one was hurt helped kill the story.
Other thing killing the story is that the media seems unaware that the mall is across the street from DARPA and the Office of Naval Research.
